“I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.””
Psalms 122:1 NKJV
The house of the Lord
One of the most overwhelming mysteries that I have tried to wrap my head around is the reality that the God of the Universe has taken up residence in this increasingly frail body of mine. When one comes to know Jesus, there is a magnificent transaction, as the dead, putrefying spirit of a lost sinner bound for hell is replaced by the Holy Spirit of God.
Though this earthly vessel is passing away, I know that the corruptible will one day give way to the incorruptible, as this house will be flipped, and will become eternal. Eve n as I suffer, I am glad that I get to dwell in this house with the Lord, and that He goes with me wherever I go.
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”
I Corinthians 3:16-17 NKJV
With the distinction of having God residing in me, I am responsible for what I do with this body. As a follower of Jesus, it is encumbered upon me to not present my body for sin, to keep pure, relying on the Spirit of God to resist the temptations of the evil one.
For me, these are lessons learned all but too late, for even now I suffer the consequences of abusing my temple through gluttony and dissipation that has brought about accelerated wear and tear. By the grace of God, He has provided a great team of doctors who have helped to keep this house livable.
Care of this house includes the care of my mind. I have developed a bit of a radar that helps me to identify dangers, looming temptations that lurk about like hungry cats. I surrender daily to the urgings of the Holy Spirit, whispering to my heart when a situation has the potential to lead to a fall. I find that my radar has become very refined as I read and reread the Scriptures and maintain a constant conscious, contact with the Lord through prayer and meditation.
The God we serve sees the end from the beginning, and He knows the searches the hearts of sinner and saint alike. Because He knows, I can have confidence in Him and can trust in Jesus. It is in those times of worship, that I know the Lord is near, and I am glad to be in the house of the Lord.
Brothers and sisters, let us go about life recognizing that the Lord is in us, that He will guide us. It is only through Him that we can do anything. So many people try and navigate through this sin filled world with no reverence for the word of God. Even now there are people suffering needlessly for they have not included the Lord.
“These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”
I Corinthians 2:13-16 NKJV
We judge things through the mind of God and not mere men. Things done with natural wisdom have natural outcomes, very often horrendous. Things done according to the wisdom of God do not fail, and lead to outcomes that are edifying to the saints and have the power to lead the lost sinner to the Lord.
Let us be faithful to live as if we are truly the dwelling place of the Lord.
