Calling

“Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.””
‭‭John‬ ‭21:20-22‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Calling

In my later days, I have found myself having faded from significance. I am often alone, but never lonely, I am forsaken by the world, but not by God. As I reflect on life, I inevitably consider all the what ifs, the potential of what I could have done for God had things come out another way.

In my weaker moments, I might find myself looking on the ministries and opportunities of others, wishing, from the flesh, that I had been able to do as others have done. But then I remember that the Lord has given me a calling, refined and created for me. I minister as an intercessor, and in that role the Lord has blessed me with His presence each morning.

Finished up John this morning, and the very familiar moment when Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him three times, and implores Peter to feed His sheep. While reading to the end, I was caused to pause on the verse where Peter is struck by envy and asks what is to come of the writer John.

He is rebuked by the Lord, and told: “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.””

“You follow me.”

Each of us has a calling from the Lord. For some of us, it is a calling to be a pastor, for some it is to be an elder, a Sunday school teacher, or a van driver. Yet for some it is the be the door keeper in the house of the Lord.

“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
Psalms 84:10 NKJV

As I sit in the quiet of enforced solitude, I rejoice that the Lord has given me a calling, that He has filled my life with blessing, that He looks upon this fragile child with great mercy. Jesus came to save the world from its sins, and transform many lives, including mine.

As I fulfill my calling, I have an audience of One. I do not consider the calling of others, but dwell on what the Lord has instructed me to do. As I pray, there are many who will never know that I have prayed for them, just I will never know who all is praying for me.

But Jesus knows.

Brothers and sisters, we have all been given a calling from the Lord. You might be one who thinks that what you do is nothing, but the Lord sees your efforts. You. Might be the one who cleans the toilets in the church bathroom, but the Lord sees, and He knows the devotion that you put into each swipe of the brush. He knows that you do it out of love for Him, and He loves you!

Never think for a moment that what you do has no significance, the Lord is always looking for those who are completely sold out to Him.

“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. “
II Chronicles 16:9a NKJV

I have learned that the Lord is with the shut in, that He visits the widow, the single mom, the outcast, and the homeless. He will be with us from our first breath, to our last. He is faithful.

Go and fulfill the calling the Lord has given you, for we all have been called to go and tell.

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV

  1. As a vocational truck driver, I have felt very similar, in my lack of ministry. And yet, the Lord has called me to pray for you daily, and many others, and I also make many phone calls, by God’s grace and for his glory. Thank you for all you do as an intercessor, my friend.
