Face to face

“So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭17‬-‭23‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”
John 1:17-18 NKJV

Face to face

One of the great joys of knowing one is drawing near to the end of ones time on this earth, is the increasing joy and anticipation of seeing the Lord Jesus face to face. With each new pain, or depth of weakness, there is great delight, for I know that this tent, so dwelled in for so many years, will someday give way to a new one, one that will be able to the where my Lord is.

In reading through Exodus chapter thirty three this morning, I was once again reminded of the great advantage the New Testament follower of Jesus has, in that we have the hope of glory, the blessed hope, the glorious appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Where Moses had but a glimpse of the glory of God at that time, because of Jesus, he was able to look fully into the face of God.

“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”
Colossians 2:9-10 NKJV

Through Christ, Moses stood in the presence of the Lord, for full transfigured, fully perceiving the full extent of His glory. I am sure that Moses marveled at what he beheld, and I am sure he reflected on that time in the cleft of the rock, finding great joy in simply catching a glimpse of the back of God.

“Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.”
Matthew 17:1-3 NKJV

Moses was not seeking after a spectacle, or an experience, but he desired the Lord be with him and the children of Israel. The LORD God honored his request, for He knew Moses by name.

“Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.””
Exodus 33:12-14 NKJV

“And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.””
Exodus 33:18 NKJV

Brothers and sisters, the Lord has given us something far greater than a mere glimpse of the glory of God, for He has taken up residence in those of us are born again, who had our sins forgiven. He is not merely God before us, but God in us, the hope of glory.

“I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians 1:24-27 NKJV

Yes my people, I rejoice in my afflictions, for through them the Lord has driven me to prayer, lifting up the saints in these perilous times.

I have suffered the loss of all visceral things, for the giving of the spiritual pleasures of an ongoing audience with the God of the Universe.

Let us never take for granted the great gift the Lord has given us. Let us be ever mindful that the God that Moses spoke to is the same member of the Godhead who created all things, and who laid aside His glory to be humbled, humbled even to death on the cross.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:5-11 NKJV

Let us go forth, my people telling people of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, telling them of this God/Man who laid aside unapproachable, unseeable glory, to made of human flesh, that this who were with Him could see Him, could touch and hold Him.

Lest we forget:

“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.”
I Corinthians 15:1-8 NKJV

As I rejoice in my afflictions, I rejoice all the more in the knowledge that one day I will be made like Him, glorified. We who have followed Him, answering the call of salvation and remaining steadfast in the faith, will one day surround the throne of God.

We will cast our crowns at the feet of our Lord. Moses will be there, along with a multitude of witnesses, and we will worship the Lamb, who will meet with us face to face, as we are all awash in His glory.

“But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it.”
Revelation 21:22-24 NKJV

“Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.”
Revelation 21:5-6 NKJV
