“Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests. “And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.’ ””
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭30‬:‭22‬-‭33‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

There is great danger in applying the things of God to the fleshly aspirations of man. The Lord has His methods, His plans, that are not our plans, and HIs ways are not our ways. All too often people try and use godly principals to anoint their own human efforts, thinking that by doing so, they will have the power of God behind them.

This tendency pervades through all of the world, for time and time again, the holy things are pressed into service, not to glorify God, but to glorify man, who himself desires to be as a god unto himself.

As I read through Exodus chapter thirty this morning, I was struck by the instructions the Lord had given Moses, especially the need to make sure that the anointing oils were only used for their holy purpose, and for nothing else. There could not even be a copy, for doing so brought the penalty of being cut off from the people.

The anointing oil in the Bible is a type of the Holy Spirit.

I brought to my mind the state of things today, for very often the lines between the holy and secular are blurred, with many earth bound institutions and ideas, being elevated to a near religious status. This is especially true in the church.

There has been a move afoot on the part of those who preach the merits of alternative lifestyles, to seek to apply the holy to the perverse, taking rites ordained by God, and broadening them to include man-made definitions not in keeping with the word of God.

These are those that Paul spoke of in the book of Romans, with foolish hearts darkened, knowing of God, and what is right, but not glorifying Him, even though it is clearly seen in nature, and in His word.

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.”
Romans 1:20-23 NKJV

Because they have taken the holy things of God and used them to worship the unholy, they have been given over to their own destruction, long over due, but soon coming to a world that has been infected by sin.

We are seeing the fruit of this unholiness, of this self worship, where people have tried to anoint flesh with the divine. We are seeing it everywhere, as the consequences are mounting as the Lord has given them over to what they truly want, that it has become a snare to them.

“Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.”
Romans 1:24-27 NKJV

Brothers and sisters, let us be faithful to keep what is holy, holy to the Lord, and use discernment in all things, especially when the world presents its facsimiles, which seem convincing on the surface, but are faulty under examination.

There are copies everywhere, my people. Whether it be popular television depictions of Jesus, or music masquerading as worship, designed to appeal to the emotions of the Christian, but not instruct their hearts, we must be watchful, filtering all things we consume through the word of God and by the discerning power of the Holy Spirit.

Be very wary of false teachers, who seek to take their fake concoctions, facsimiles of the anointing oil of the Holy Spirit, and fool you into thinking they are of God.

They are not.

The penalty is being cut off from ones people, and that is a danger that is most immanent, for even now the Lord is examining hearts to see who is truly loving His appearing and who have turned after other gods.

Let us follow the instructions of our God without deviation, approaching Him as He desires, that we not find ourselves meeting the same fate as Nadab and Abihu, who approached the altar with strange fire.

“Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’ ” So Aaron held his peace.”
Leviticus 10:1-3 NKJV

The Lord has given use this example in His word as a warning. May we be wise and heed it.
