Protoevangelium

“And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.””
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬-‭15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Protoevangelium

Oh the majesty of Jesus! Before the very moment that the sin of Adam and Eve was brought to light, the eternal Son was ordained to go and provide propitiation. It was His hands that formed Adam from the dust, and built Eve from a rib, and it was in His hands the nails were hammered through.

He is the God of Creation, and He determined before the foundation of the earth to go and die for the sins of Adam and all of His offspring. And one day, He saved me.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
John 1:1-5 NKJV

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 NKJV

As I read through my various chapters, I was struck once again by the symmetry, how each and every one had some linkage to the whole, creating a unity and cohesion of the Scriptures. The entirety of the bible is a testament to God’s desire to save. From the protoevangelium, the first mention of God’s solution to sin, to the account of the protection of the Child in Matthew chapter two, we are given a glimpse of the fulfillment of the grace and mercy of the Lord.

As the Lord promised, so He delivered.

“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.””
Matthew 2:13-15 NKJV

As I read, I felt a confidence building up in me, buttressing past faith, and building all the more upon it, for I could see the completeness of His plan. Saving us was not an afterthought, but His primary mission. That reality is what gives me an ever increasing desire to read the bible.

It also reminded me of the enmity between the God and Satan, who sought to derail the plans of God. That enmity is ongoing, for there is a spiritual war happening. Even now there are those whose father is the devil, who seek to derail the plans of God. But, like in the garden, the Lord has already given and answer and provided the solution.

When I look about the issues of this age, I can easily become overwhelmed, as so many godless things are codified into law, and so many things once taboo, become commonplace. But then I remember, we are living in a world that has been surrendered to the devil, as Adam relinquished his right to rule and hold dominion over the earth, when he fell to sin.

Then I am taken back to that moment when the protoevangelium in the garden became relevant to a broken sinner named Bernie. In what seemed like an instant, I was saved, and the Lord began the sanctification of my soul, bring last transformation to a corrupted heart.

Brothers and sisters, let us rejoice in the fact that, even as sin entered the world, God provided an answer. And that answer is as good now as it ever was.

The world we live in is under a curse, and is careening toward the abyss, but even as things seem so dark, we can see the light in what its coming, for we have the word of God to remind us, and those of us who are born again, have the constant reminder of the Holy Spirit, spurring us to holiness, and confirming to us that we are HIs.

We are in a time when the people of the nations are raging against God and each other, for the pain of sin has wrecked the world and there seems to be no remedy.

“Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.”
Psalms 2:1-4 NKJV

They do not know that their destiny has already been determined. And has ours.

“And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.””
Revelation 21:6-8 NKJV

Let us use this Christmas season as an opportunity to go and tell, to remind all of the true reason, the protoevangelium.

Go and tell, my people, tis the season, shout it from the mountain top, and from the valley! EMMANUEL HAS COME TO US!

Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And brought us all salvation
That blessed Christmas morn
