Calmed and quieted

“Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord From this time forth and forever.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭131‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Calmed and quieted

I wanted to stay up late last night, monitoring the election results from my array of monitors, but as the evening progressed, I found my body yearned for sleep. After a couple of hours, I finally yielded and went to bed. A calm came over me, for I knew, regardless of the outcome, my God was in control.

There are many things happening in our world, and the coming year promises to be filled with great tumult, as our supply chains are crumbling, and even now, food is increasingly in short supply. It would be easy to dwell on all these things happening, but one would find themselves overwhelmed, and disquieted, and ultimately drawn away from the Lord.

Once again, the Lord has the right Scripture for the right moment, as the great Physician knows exactly what to prescribe for His beloved patient. I was reminded of calmer times, when I was young and I found peace in the arms of my mother.

By focusing on the Lord and His sovereignty, I do not have to worry about things, over which, I ultimately have no control. The Lord has given me a life where I can do little for myself, and I am at His mercy. He has demonstrated His care and concern for me day in and day out, and His mercies are ongoing.

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the Lord.”
Lamentations 3:22-26 NKJV

I suspect that all of us, regardless of political affiliation, are going to come to fully understand that the Lord holds all in His hand, as those we have so eagerly rooted for, fail us once again. There are supernatural powers in control of this world, and the humans that we see are but graphical user interfaces designed to distract us, and hide the power behind the curtain, in our coming hellscape patterned after Oz.

We are not going to find the yellow brick road this time, only one pockmarked with potholes and missile impacts.

Brothers and sisters, let us focus on the Lord. One of the most delightful things for me last night, was the disconnectedness that I felt. As an independent, I had no skin in the game. I was like unto a spectator watching a domestic spat in a fast food restaurant, and wondering who was going throw the chocolate shake first.

We have been warned by the Lord, time and time again of the failures of humanity, yet we keep chasing the dream of a world governed by the wicked that is made righteous by the effort.

“It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.”
Psalms 118:8-9 NKJV

I think it no wonder that this passage is at the exact midpoint of the bible, as if the Lord is trying to make the point abundantly clear. Solomon, the great wise king, came to the same conclusion, though he came to it through much effort.

“And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.”
Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 NKJV

Fear God.

Those of us who are the followers of Jesus, know that the Lord is for us, that He is with us, and that He is in us. Let us go forth and complete the ministry He has set before us, reminding us daily of the truth that nothing can separate us from the love of the Lord. May we be calmed and quieted, as the well loved children of God.

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:31-39 NKJV

Methinks we will come to understand more fully the meaning of this passage in the coming days, weeks, months, and…perhaps, years.

  1. Wow, Bernie! Some good stuff in here.

    I love this thought:
“There are supernatural powers in control of this world, and the humans that we see are but graphical user interfaces designed to distract us, and hide the power behind the curtain, in our coming hellscape patterned after Oz.”

What a true and hideous word picture. Well done my friend.

Will you please pray for our friends, C and EBay as we host them for another Bible study tonight, focused on sin and repentance? Thanks so much, my friend!

I’m so thankful you were able to get good sleep

  2. Shortly after my salvation, and during my second separation from my wife, the Lord gave me an incredible picture of God’s love for me. He gave me a dream where I was in a cage, but not trapped. As I looked around the cage, I found the floor. Upon closer Review, the floor was actually my earthly, fathers, calloused hands, tenderly holding me safe. The Lord, use this to stamp a picture of God‘s love for me and his incredible strength, using the pictures of my dad‘s strong hands.

God is so good! I am thankful you are enjoying him, as well, my friend.
