Salvation near

“And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭13:11-14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Salvation near

Every morning I awaken to the reality that we are one day closer to our salvation. The salvation I speak of is that which will come when the Lord Jesus returns to reclaim the world from the prince and power of the air.

When I first believed, it was a distant echo of things to come, far louder than it must have been for Paul, but would become louder still as time passed. Now it is a resounding din, making itself known to us and filling our hearts with warning and joy.

Followers of Jesus are in perilous times, as the evil one is on the march, desperate to hold on to the ones who are his, and bent on destroying those who belong to God. Though the light of day is coming, we know that the darkest hours are those before the dawn, and the most perilous for those who are longing for the Lord’s appearing are at hand.

The passage in Roman’s thirteen was very cautionary for me, as I can see the great temptations that are being placed before the adopted children of God. Fresh from the divine deliverance of victory over abortion, it is easy to consider that some will let down their guard. But we must not.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.”
I Peter 5:8-10 NKJV

Because the evil one is on the prowl, and we can be assured that he will be pressing against those who have been saved by Jesus, for in us is the testimony of the glory of God. He knows that the glory of God has the power to break the his grip on people.

In the midst of whatever suffering we may have to endure, let us be mindful of who we are, and that even the most severe things we may face cannot compare to the glory that we see.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Romans 8:18 NKJV

Brothers and sisters, let us remember this one thing: The night is far spent, and the day is at hand.

Let us be faithful to maneuver in the darkness of this hour, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, made clear to us through the word of God. There are many dark paths that we must walk through in these coming days, and each is filled with stumbling blocks that could throw us down steep and rugged places. But the word can light our paths.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Psalms 119:105 NKJV

Through God’s gift of revelation, sealed and completed in His written word, we have all that we need to move forward and complete the mission that the Lord Jesus has given us. May we be a people who are focused on what the Lord has called us to do, and may we be sober in the journey, remaining steadfast to resist the temptations of the world.

We are on a rescue mission and time is running out. In light of this, let us have the this mind in us that was in Paul.

“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:12-14 NKJV

Let us be working for that “upward call”!

  1. And what a wonderful burden it is to bear. Come Lord Jesus.

1 Peter 4:7-8 (ESV) 7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
