“Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭16:16-19‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

The Harlot system, the offspring of that great city Babel, dispersed so long ago, is built up on the furtherance of sin and self indulgence. The city itself was not destroyed, only the people and their influence was pushed all over the world. Those who inhabited her, in spirit, desired to do as they will, with no regard for the values of God. The wanted to make a name for themselves.

“And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.””
Genesis 11:4-7 NKJV

Since that day, those harlot has made every effort to reconstitute, to undo what the Lord did. In the effort, sin has become international, as societies far and near have been corrupted, following the same patterns of old. The demons of the age are active, infiltrating every aspect of humanity, being invited in through the senses, as people are drawn sway after their own lusts.

One need only turn on the television and see that its very structure is sustained on the idea of getting one to do as they desire. There is no more sense of moderation, but of excess, as all manner of self destructive sin is pushed. What was once taboo, has been institutionalized, with even celebrities defining what is good, and what is to be applauded in the open square.

Those that bring a message of opposition, run the risk of reaping the whirlwind of public discontent. Reading Acts chapter sixteen this morning, I defamiliarized myself with Paul and Silas being accosted by a girl with a spirit, or demon of divination. She went before them announcing their coming and who they represented.

When the follower of Jesus seeks to bring the word of God into the public arena, there is always a mocking that accompanies it, for those in the world do not desire to hear anything that runs counter to the message of self indulgence.

Even those who have received the most dire of consequences, refuse the saving message of the Gospel. I recall a man that I had known since youth, stumbling drunkenly through my neighborhood. He approached me wanting twenty dollars. I had no money with me, but I offered what I did have, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

When I shared, his countenance changed, and he looked at me as if I had said something insulting. “No thanks, man.” He stumbled way. Years later, I know longer saw him, and I suspect he has died as a result of the drinking.

He had been blinded by the demons of this world, that affirmed his excess and demeaned the saving grace only available from Jesus. Because he was doing what the world expected and accepted, he was emotionally and rationally unaware of the destruction happening to him.

When Paul delivered the girl from her demons, those who benefited from her captivity were enraged and delivered Paul and Silas to the authorities. They had use the status quo.

“And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, “These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.” Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.”
Acts 16:20-24 NKJV

Sin in this world is big business, and whole economies are dependent on people getting caught up in sin.

Brothers and sisters, we are quickly coming to the time when the harlot system, long overlooked, is coming into her full power. It is she we must be concerned with as followers of Jesus. The much feared antichrist has barely a mention in the book of Revelation, but the harlot takes up three chapters.

There is a rapture of believers coming soon, and even now the Lord of glory is examining hearts to see whose are truly His and who are not. Those who are not taken will face the harlot in her fury, as she seeks to please her lover the beast.

“The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.”
Revelation 17:4-6 NKJV

She has been slaughtering the martyrs of Jesus for nearly two thousand years, and she at the height of her drunkenness and revelry. As we go and tell, she will inevitably increase her efforts to stop us, and those who remain will face great opposition.

Let us rejoice, even in the face of that opposition, for the spread of the Gospel will not be stopped. Those that remain, will receive and apostolic helping, a double portion of the Holy Spirit in which to complete their work. When they are finished, there will be the greatest harvest.

““And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
‭‭Joel‬ ‭2:28-29‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.””
Revelation 7:9-12 NKJV

“Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?” And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
Revelation 7:13-14 NKJV

Let us press on into the storm of opposition, looking forward to the glory to come.

  1. Ironically, Lori and I were just talking about this topic yesterday, from revelations 13 and 17. May we keep our eyes fixed on the prize, advancing for the gospel sake.

Philippians 3:12-14 (ESV) 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
