“Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Philippians 4:14-20 NKJV
According to His riches and glory
At a critical time in my walk as a Christian, I began to learn to trust God. I learned that if I sought Him with all my heart, that I need not worry about the day to day things. The Lord would provide. Since that learning, I have never been in need. Mind you, there have been many times when it was not until I looked back that I saw how the Lord had provided, but He aways has been faithful.
“Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:30-33 NKJV
As I prepared the meme for the church this morning, I thought of the provision the Lord provides for His saints, focusing more on the spiritual things, for that is where I dwell these days. I am no longer in a place of abundance, living a life thoroughly disabled, and unable to do many of the things even in ministry that I one did.
I existed under limited circumstances, and receive the blessings of God with great joy.
“A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.”
Proverbs 27:7 NKJV
In my life of loss, I have seen the Jesus loom far larger in my life. As all tangibles have been stripped from my me, I have seen the glory of the Lord more clearly. You see, it is not about the material, but the spiritual that truly matters.
Sin has caused great loss in this sinful world, as many are starving in diverse places, and soon, we here in the wealthiest nation on Earth, will see those lowest economically, starving right before our eyes.
Reading the passage in Philippians chapter four, I read of Paul complementing those who had given to the ministry. For they had sent aid to those in the field, and to poorer churches. Paul encourages them in their giving, reminding them in a similar vein as in Matthew chapter six, that in doing the work of the Gospel, by putting Him first, the Lord supplies all needs according to His riches and glory.
Even as I count so many things as losses, I count the increasing intimacy with the Lord as the greatest gain. I given all that I am to the Lord, sacrificing all that will be, in pursuit of Him.
Brothers and sisters, the days are going to be critical, and going forth to spread the Gospel will be costly. There will be much loss, and likewise, great need. Let us be people who go about life giving to the Lord, not only of our resource, but with our devotion and love.
It will be difficult in the open square to proclaim the Good News, for those who love death will be shouting against us, seeking to shut us up about this Jesus. But we must press on.
Give to the furtherance of the Gospel. I personally give to a variety of ministries that are working in the most dangerous parts of the world to being the message of salvation in Jesus. They also bring the basic things, such as food and water. They feed the bodies and the souls.
Though I have little to give, I know the Lord will provide for me, for He always has. I hope that my giving will aid in the great harvest of souls before the soon coming of the Lord.
““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,”
Ephesians 3:20 NKJV
