“But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.””
Acts 8:9-10 NKJV
“Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.””
Acts 8:14-19 NKJV
Modern day simony
1 the buying or selling of ecclesiastical privileges, for example pardons or benefices.
I read the familiar story of Simon this morning, the sorcerer who sought to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit, that he make money from the laying on of hands. When he approached Peter and John, he was rebuked for he had sinned greatly, for the things of God are not for sale.
The world is doing all that it can to convince people that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is up for sale. There are evil forces vying to have the privileges of the faith, and the influence it brings, with no desire to actually reflect the source of that faith with is Jesus.
Over the last few days, I have witnessed pro abortion activists standing outside a catholic church yelling “Thank God for abortion”.
There are denominations, wrapping themselves in mock righteousness, advocating for the killing of the pre-born, and telling the world that it is all to the glory of God. Those with money and a heart for that cause, purchase the spirituality of these false clergy.
On the other extreme, I had a lengthy text exchange with a purported brother in Christ who tried in vain to convince me that I should become more political, that my simple devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ was folly, and that politics needed to be added to the Gospel.
They who are on the right, those who have hyphenated their faith, calling themselves “Christian-Conservatives”, have abandoned the full power of God, in favor of worldly power. They too are practicing simony, for the Lord Jesus has called us to go and tell of the Good News, that Jesus saves sinners.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
He did not say, “go and make republicans, or democrats.” Or “go and support Donald Trump”, or “go and support Joe Biden.”He commanded us to go and make disciples. Change in this world comes from the salvation found only in Jesus, as each heart is changed.
I was once a humanist, a liberal, a denizen of the dark side. I can remember almost having to pay for an abortion, as the woman I knew was late with her cycle. But glory be to God, the Lord found me, saved me, and transformed my heart. I am a citizen of Heaven and my ONLY desire is to glorify the One who saved me.
As I reflect on the things that I have seen the past few days, I can see, in both cases, a type of simony, where people of differing extremes recognize the power of God, but seek to use it for their own purposes and gain, apart from the mission of leading people to Jesus.
A lot of money is being raised and spent for the causes outside of the Gospel.
There is great danger in trying to use the things of God for purposes that are not His. At the very least, we miss out on the opportunity and the blessing of leading one lost and suffering to the joys of Salvation in the Lord. We also lose sight of the glory of God, as we no longer walk in the spirit, but in the flesh, as our goals are no longer as high as Heaven, but are lower to the earth.
Then there is the sin of blasphemy, though forgivable, causes the followers of Jesus to become estranged from the Savior. They no longer walk in the Spirit, and things of God fade in significance. In these perilous times, losing that sense of the glory, can cause one to fall way, and chase after those with false glory. There is one coming soon, who draw the world after himself.
“But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God.”
Acts 8:20-21 NKJV
Brothers and sisters, we are nearing the zero hour. There will be no Kingdom Now, no Seven Mountain Mandate, the Lord is coming soon, and He will rend the world just as the Bible says. He is coming to bring judgement of all those who do not know Him, and refinement for those who do.
I urge you to turn away from of the pursuit of earthly things and cease trying to use the word of God for your own purposes. Even now the Lord is examining hearts to see whose are His.
As Peter urged Simon:
“Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.””
Acts 8:22-23 NKJV
We have so little time. When each of us stands before the Lord there will be no MAGA hats, and no banners touting Build Back Better. There will only be Jesus, and on Him will be a sash, that says faithful and true. The world will soon see the Lord coming through the clouds and He will be victorious.
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.”
Revelation 19:11-14 NKJV
