“Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Psalms 119:97-105 NKJV
Light for the path
All the familiar paths have become obscured, hidden in the overgrowth of sinfulness that has made it all but impossible to walk about in this world without stumbling. All the familiar walkways have been darkened, ever increasing the hazard, as one does not know where next to plant a foot, for one direction might find solid ground, and the next the abyss.
As I have sought to make my way, I rely on the word of God more and more as my guide. It is a map of the terrain that is unchanging, set deeply etched in the ancient ground. The contours of the path can only be seen with spiritual eyes, that can perceive the old walkways, illuminated by the Holy Spirit.
The evil one has sought to erase the paths set by God, but he has failed, as they remain, unchanged and there for those who seek them. They are forever, and in due time, it is the paths of the devil that will be erased.
Once again in Psalm one hundred nineteen, and oh what a sweet trip it has been. So often I have skimmed through this chapter, checking off the “done” box. But this season, the Lord has slowed me down, urging me to get a sense of what He is trying to tell me. In God’s word, is intimacy with Him, that cannot be found any other way.
His word is truly a light unto my feet, guiding me to the Lord Jesus, that I be refined and transformed into HIs image. It is a solitary walk, as the God of the Universe, leads me by His word into spiritual growth.
As I have studied the word, I have moved beyond the teachings of those who served me my milk, instructing me as if holding a bottle to my lips. I now have solid food, and I seek the knowledge of God eagerly with fork in hand.
I work hard to sort the good food from the junk, that my soul receives only good nutrition.
“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.”
Psalms 1:1-3 NKJV
As I have spent time meditating on the word of God, I have seen my outcomes improve. Before I came to Jesus, my life was on a calamitous path, driven by sin, and running headlong toward death. But the Lord rescued me.
“He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps.”
Psalms 40:2 NKJV
Brothers and sisters, let us seek the Lord in these darkening times, for we will need the illumination the Lord provides to perceive the ancient walkways that are true. The route the world desires that we take leads only to hell. It is a crowded path, and it is steeply graded down hill, and it is getting slippery.
I can tell you that the path that leads to God has an upward grade, but we have been given en the Helper, the Holy Spirit to assist us. The walk is worth it, for the Lord gives strength for the journey.
My people, the journey will be hard, as we face many things and perhaps, many losses. But know this, my people, the Lord will be with use and faithful regardless.
“Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls— Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments.”
Habakkuk 3:17-19 NKJV
God has provided those who us who have been called to serve as lights for those who are lost. God’s word provides light for our paths, that we be light for the world. Let us seek the Lord daily, that our light shine brightly before humanity, leading others along the narrow path to salvation in Jesus.
You might be one in utter darkness and you do not know of this ancient path. Every step you take is filled with pitfalls and stumbling, and the abyss awaits at every turn. The Lord has light for you!
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.””
John 8:12 NKJV
