Give us a king

““Now therefore, stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking a king for yourselves.” So Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.””
‭‭I Samuel‬ ‭12:16-19‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Give us a king

The world is in trouble. Everywhere one might hazard to look, there is impending doom, as mortal men pretending to have the power of God make decisions that can have calamitous implications for all of humanity.

Even here in America, we have sought to elevate mortal men to godhood, looking to them to build back better, or make America great again. Even those who profess to name the name of Jesus have gotten caught up in drafting lesser gods and seeking kings from among themselves.

As I read the passage in I Samuel chapter twelve, I thought of all the ways we as a nation have failed to heed the admonitions that the Lord has provided. He has given us so many types and shadows to us as warnings, that we be aware of the pitfalls that can ensnare us.

“Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”
I Corinthians 10:11 NKJV

So many things befell the children of Israel as they did not accept the sovereignty of God.

The Israelites, were given a powerful example as Samuel called upon the Lord to send down thunder and rain. For a moment they felt holy fear, but then just as quickly, they went back to their own ways.

Many of us are the very much the same. In our case, we have not sought a king, but we have sought to fulfill our wishes by our own means, by either doing what we desire or electing people we think will deliver the outcomes that we want.

These days are filled with division, as left is against right, and right against left. Each side is vying to define God by their own terms. Those on the left seek a god that is permissive to all sin, winks at abomination and holds no consequence, as he is all love and would never send anyone to hell. Their god allows the murder of innocents, viewing it as holy. Theirs is a god of racial identity, as they ignore the content of one’s character.

Not the God of the Bible.

The right depicts a god that stamps people who do not sin the way they do into pulp, hates anyone not having the right skin color, repels the stranger from its borders, condemns the poor, the homeless, and the addicted, and shows great favor to the very rich. Their god cares for the unborn, but neglects those already born leaving to fend for themselves.

Not the God of the Bible.

Because we do not see our desires fully realized in the God of the Universe, we seek our own kings, leaders that feed our appetites and makes feel affirmed. We even go so far as to extend this into the types of people we choose to lead us in the church.

It has been a long while since the Lord has sent down thunder and rain as a show of power upon the world, but soon and very soon, the world will experience a move of God that will shake us to our cores and remind us that He is real. He will dash the kings we have chosen for ourselves, and Jesus alone will reign.

Brothers and sisters, we do not have to wait for the this soon future time when Lord Jesus returns. Each of us who has been redeemed by the Father has experienced one of the greatest miracles of all, the transformation of a soul, the redemption of what was lost. God has changed our destiny from hell to heaven.

Unlike the kings we have chosen for ourselves, we have a King who will never fail, who will reign, who will renew all things. We are seeing the curses of our chosen kings, as they are leading the world to the edge of oblivion.

Soon the Lord will bring an end to kings and kingdoms.

“Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God, that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.” And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh.”
Revelation 19:17-21 NKJV

May we be bold and go out daily to evangelize the lost. We must tell them while there is still time. May each of us determine in our hearts that we will turn from the sin of the children of Israel when they demanded a king to rule over them.

Let us declare to the world that we have no king but Jesus!
