Anguished

“I cried out to God with my voice— To God with my voice; And He gave ear to me. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; My soul refused to be comforted. I remembered God, and was troubled; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭77:1-3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Anguished

I awoke in anguish this morning. I felt like the weight of the world was upon me, as my heart and mind are being buffeted by events going on in our world, and in my life. The Lord has given me a heart of compassion, replacing the stony, indifferent heart I had before I met Jesus. I have become overly empathetic, and as I pray for others, I have had to work hard not to take upon myself too much of the pain.

During the night, I awoke several times, and found myself reflecting, feeling hopeless. In my heart, I know all these things happening in our world must come to pass, but that does not make accepting it all any easier.

Oh, faithful God! I open my bible app and in my reading for the day, I find Psalm seventy seven, just the thing for what ails me. I have cried much these last few weeks, as a spirit of mourning has filled my heart. I know that time is short.

There have been times when the tears have not come, having been exhausted, replaced by dry anguished cries over the state of our world. Like the Psalm begins, I cry out to the Lord with my voice, and with my heart, and God gives ear to me. There have been moments when even that has not helped.

“You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. I have considered the days of old, The years of ancient times. I call to remembrance my song in the night; I meditate within my heart, And my spirit makes diligent search. Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more? Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah”
Psalms 77:4-9 NKJV

The struggle gives way to sleeplessness and more reflection, as I try and remember the good things the Lord has done in my life. It is easy to come to a point when doubt seeks to push aside faith, as flesh battles Spirit, but God always prevails.

I have amassed many stones of remembrance over my many years, and I have little work to do to find examples of God’s faithfulness. He has delivered me, despite my best efforts to thwart His plans for me. We serve a relentless God, who will complete His work.

“And I said, “This is my anguish; But I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High.” I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds. Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Who is so great a God as our God? You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. You have with Your arm redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah”
Psalms 77:10-15 NKJV

Brothers and sisters, you may be one who right now is feeling completely lost. Know that the Lord loves you. Jesus went to the cross of our sins, giving His all that we could have intimacy with Him. He broke through the divider created by our sin, and made a way to righteousness.

Jesus has brought light into our darkest moment. Let us reflect on His works of old, all the moments that He has delivered us, even when we felt like we did not deserve it. May we be bold and go and tell others of Jesus and all that He has done, of His greatest gift, of salvation through His blood.

Let us remember His sovereignty, how His hands created everything, how the one who whispered into being the vast cosmos, whispered to calm the stormy sea, has the power to speak peace into you and me.

As long as there is breath, there is hope. Seek Him today.

  1. So thankful you were encouraged that the Lord will complete, what he has began in you. Philippians 1:6. I had to quote scripture, my battle verses, last night to get to sleep. I have a dear friend who I love very much too has, and still is making sinful choices. Will you please pray for the Lord to mercifully humble my friend B? As always Bernie, I deeply appreciate your prayers!!!
