“Give unto the Lord, O you mighty ones, Give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; The voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars, Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon. He makes them also skip like a calf, Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; The Lord shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth, And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everyone says, “Glory!” The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood, And the Lord sits as King forever.”
Psalms 29:1-10 NKJV
The voice of God
I watched the festivities happening in Times Square the other night, as the world welcomed a new year. I like to watch Point Of View videos of people walking in diverse places. It is like I am actually there walking along. On New Years Eve, I watched one of my favorites, ActionKid on Youtube.
As I sat there in the Duffy Square, virtually waiting for the ball to drop, I was overwhelmed at the din of voices and music that filled the area. I had to turn down the volume. I thought of how so much noise in the culture can rattle the follower of Jesus to the degree that they cannot perceive the voice of God. I am not talking about an audible voice, nor have I ever heard Him, but the impressions made upon the blood cleaned heart of the believer, made by the Holy Spirit through the word of God.
As I read through bible, I am once again reminded of all the things God is, and how majestic and glorious. His sovereignty is stated clearly, as He governs all things. His voice, called into being all of creation, ordained from the foundation of eternity.
In the cacophony of noise filling our world, I have found that I need to train my ear to hear only Him. There are so many things competing for our attention. None of those things brings blessing, and many of them bring only pain.
I have come to trust in the voice of my Lord, as He calls to me from the volume of His Holy Scriptures. As I have matured in the faith, my heart is tuned to Him, as it perceives His whispers, being guided away from sin and toward life everlasting.
His voice is my constant guide, heard down deep, piercing to my very soul. As I hear Him, He searches me, like talking loudly into an empty room, and listening for the echo from deep within, sounding from the depths of my soul. If He hears what should not be, His word is there to remind me, convict me, and make correction by the power of the Holy Spirit.
“O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.”
Psalms 139:1-4 NKJV
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalms 139:23-24 NKJV
When I face trials, I know that my God is in control. He is sovereign over everything I may face, and any outcome that may come my way is no surprise to Him.
Brothers and sisters, let us tune our hearts to hear the voice of God, capturing every whisper. That same God who splinters the cedars of Lebanon, and can make them dance, can deal with anything we choose to bring to Him. Those of us who know the Lord, who have come to Him by faith, have an advocate that will be with us regardless of the situation.
God is for us.
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.”
Psalms 18:1-3 NKJV
No matter what becomes of this year, we know that the same God that whispered all into being, will once again carry us through, even if it is into glory.
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.””
Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV
