“But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.””
Matthew 1:20-21 NKJV
Conjunction
Hypostatic union. Don’t ask me to explain. I can’t. But one day, long ago, God became a Man and dwelt among us. He was fully God and fully Man, and had all the struggles that we do, and did not sin. In Jesus, we have the conjunction when Heaven joined earth, God joined man, and brought the promise of salvation to all who would believe.
My mind can’t take it in, how God would come to do what He did. Such amazing love. I remember all the times that God could have simply discarded His creation and started over, of the reality that He could have destroyed Adam and Eve when they sinned, and begun anew. Yet, even then, He had a plan.
Glorious God!
I think of Joseph, in love, yet confused, as the woman he desired showed up pregnant, and he was not the father. One of the worst fears that any man has is being the cuckold, the fool, betrayed by one’s wife, yet God intervened, and revealed His plan Joseph showed great faith, defied the culture around him, and took Mary to be his wife.
“So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.”
Matthew 1:22-25 NKJV
Inside Mary, the greatest miracle aside from creation, and the resurrection was occuring as Diety was veiled in human flesh, as the eternal met the mortal, and the light of Heaven, came to dwell amongst men.
Our world is looking forward to a galactic event tonight, where Jupitor and Saturn will appear close in the southwestern night sky. It is said that this could be what the wise men saw that marked the birth of Jesus. I will likely be asleep at its peak. Yet, I have an eternal celebration, ongoing, of the ultimate conjunction, when God met man and Jesus came into the world to forgive my sins.
Brothers and sisters, let us go out and tell the world about the conjunction that happened in the virgin womb of a teenager, on a night two thousand years ago.
Let us tell of of a faithful man and woman, who were willing to do the hard things, at a time when it was dangerous to defy the culture.
Tell of that great story, of that conjunction of God’s forgiveness of your darkest sin, of how God reclaimed your life from hell, and delivered you to the Kingdom of God.
That is the glory of Christmas. Bring the gift of the Gospel, to all who will hear. The need is great, and time is short. Let us bring the gift of the Word to a sick and dying world.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 NKJV
