“Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”
Matthew 8:5-10 NKJV
God has taught me that He is Sovereign over everything, and that His word is true. Because of that, I can rest knowing that when I pray, He will answer. The answer He gives me might be yes, it might be no, it might be wait, but it will come. Sometimes it may seem like the answer is coming slower than I desire, and in those times, my faith is being tested.
Over the span of my walk with Jesus, I can see a more whole picture of God’s working, and I have learned that He surely has authority. There are those who desire to see a miracle, or to see the Lord work, but I have learned to have faith that He will do what He will do, and that He do it at just the right time.
Some of the greatest miracles are the ones not readily seen, as the Lord transforms the human heart.
When Jesus encountered the centurion in Matthew chapter eight, He had ordained that moment from the foundation of the creation. Long before the centurion was even born, God the Son, Elohim, Creator God knew there would be that moment when a gentile would show faith greater than anyone in Israel.
God has given me time and a desire to pray for others. There are many great needs that I regularly lift to the Lord. I lift them, knowing that my God has heard me. I have to admit I am not one to “pound on heaven’s door,” with the same prayers over and over. I know that the Lord has His own time table, and some of the answers will come when they come.
The centurion had a great faith, in that he knew that He need only tell Jesus of the needs for healing. He told Jesus, in effect praying to Him, and he went on his way.
“Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.”
Matthew 8:13 NKJV
There are those who will try gimmicks to bring about answers to prayer, or some how curry favor with God. I have learned that all that the Lord desires is that you abide in Him. So many books have been written about that gimmick, or this one, of walking backwards or drawing circles around whatever you want. None of those things really work.
““And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.”
Matthew 6:5-7 NKJV
I have also learned that as one becomes closer to the Lord, and walks in the Spirit, you learn how to pray, and what to pray for. When one is walking in the flesh, there can be a tendency to look at God as some kind of cosmic genie, granting every wish.
I know that the God who had the power to save my soul, has the authority and power to bring into fruition anything. He can change the heart of a nation, one soul at a time. I know He changed me.
Brothers and sisters, take heart, being reminded that we serve a God who is sovereign, having great mercy. Jesus has authority over creation itself, and is at this very moment interceding on your behalf.
Let us walk by faith, and not fear, confident in His authority.
Sleep well my people.
