“(for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn And will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”), by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.”
Hebrews 7:21-28 NKJV
Everlasting
There is something I have observed in politics that has convinced of the futility of putting all of ones hopes in a political party or candidate. Inevitably one party will supersede the other, one candidate will defeat another and all progress made during a given term will be undone. It is all vanity.
The children of Is real were in a similar predicament, because the men who were destined to be high priests had one insurmountable flaw: they died. Another major flaw, was the fact that they were sinners, just like the people the were to represent.
The priests who were charged with entering the Holy of Holies each year at Atonement, had to wear bells around the hem of their garments. If they entered the Holy of Holies and had sin that they had not atoned for, or if they did something incorrectly, they were killed by the Lord.
If the bells were not heard by those outside the inner sanctum, there was likelihood that the high priest had died, and needed to be pulled out by the rope that was tied to their ankle.
Jesus provided a far better priesthood, for His commission was everlasting, having no end, on the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood is forever, and as a result of that we know that we can go before God at any time. When Jesus was on the cross, His body was rent, and likewise the veil in the temple was rent as well, torn top to bottom, giving us access to God.
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
Matthew 27:50-53 NKJV
Because of Jesus, we do not have to offer up sacrifices daily, for Jesus died once for all.
“And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”
Hebrews 10:11-14 NKJV
In this precarious world we are living in, where each day there seems to be one more reminder of the depravity of humanity, it is good that we have a great High Priest on whom rests our security of salvation and forgiveness.
We also have the promise of future governance, because one day, Jesus will return to rule and reign, rendering null and void the political pendulum that has been a curse for all of civilization. His Kingdom will stand forever.
“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.”
Psalms 145:13 NKJV
We will enter a home with no end, and eternity will be the smallest measure of time. Let us look forward to that time. And, brothers and sisters, let us go out and tell of our Great High Priest who saves us forever, and is even now interceding on our behalf.
“But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
Revelation 21:22-27 NKJV
