“Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things; His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. The Lord has made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations. He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises. Sing to the Lord with the harp, With the harp and the sound of a psalm, With trumpets and the sound of a horn; Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King. Let the sea roar, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell in it; Let the rivers clap their hands; Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord, For He is coming to judge the earth. With righteousness He shall judge the world, And the peoples with equity.”
Psalms 98:1-9 NKJV
I need to leave the news turned off. When I watch my various streaming news services, I find myself alternatively excited and frightened as I see what is happening in every corner of the world. It is like listening to the thunder during a storm, and seeing lightening and counting down until the boom. The longer the count the farther away the thunder.
In the storm that is engulfing our planet, the lightning is flashing, and the thunder is getting closer. Soon the storm will be up on us.
There is no basement to run to from this storm, and no way to duck and cover. It is coming, it cannot be escaped. Unlike the storms that run across the earth, we know what comes after this one. We will rise in the aftermath and see the double rainbow, the reminder of God’s promise that He would never again destroy the earth by a flood.
“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.”
Genesis 9:13 NKJV
Reading Psalm 98 this morning, reminded me of things to come, of coming attractions. I am reminded that even the most awful storm passes, there will be an end, a time when the sun reappeared. There will be great joy after the coming storm, because all things will be made right and true justice will prevail. The Son will reappear and all will be at peace.
This is a promise to those who have called upon the name of the Lord for salvation. This will like unto a double rainbow, as we will not only have deliverance, but we will see the coming of our King back to the earth, to save and to judge. He will rule and reign.
Right now the skies are darkening, and we can hear peels of thunder far away, but we who have bowed at the cross know that our brothers and sisters in those far off places are bearing under that storm that is coming. Let us be in prayer for them, that they be bold, that they have opportunity, and that they would be faithful to go and tell, even through the pressure of persecution.
Let us also pray for ourselves, as we must endure and fulfill the ministry set before us. We know that the Lord will be with us as He said He would. We have not been given an mission impossible, but one only doable through the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV
The mission does not pause due to the storm, but it must continue. There are those in the storm with us who do not know the Lord and the storm itself will open hearts and minds to the Gospel. May we be alert to the opportunities that the Lord will provide.
Brothers and sisters, prepare for the storm! It is coming! Let us be built up on the word of God, let us be steadfast in prayer, and let us not neglect the meeting of the saints. We will need to shelter with one another in the coming storm. No one can stand alone agains the heavy winds that coming.
Continue to focus on what is coming next, as we know that the Lord is coming again. I long to see that double rainbow, as the storm passes and the Lord appears. There will be the one as the storm passes, and another adorning the King on His throne. Oh to see Him in Heaven, on His throne, adorned in glory.
“Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!””
Revelation 4:2-3, 8 NKJV
Let us find rest in the coming of the Lord, and may we be filled with that blessed peace that can come only from knowing Jesus.
