“I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.”
Galatians 1:6-10 NKJV
I read somewhere that today is “Middle finger to God to end Christianity Day.” We are living in a day when humanity is spiraling downward, to the degree that they have the audacity to curse the very Creator who gave them life, and sustains them day by day. If ever there was a time to share the Gospel, it is now.
Sadly, just as the world is in dire need of the Good News, those charged with sharing it have added and taken away from it, in an effort to make it more palatable, or acceptable to those who are seekers.
As I began reading Galatians this morning, I couldn’t help but notice how relevant the chapter is today. The message of the Gospel is simple: Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross, was buried and rose again. In believing who He is, and what He did, we can have forgiveness. We are saved from sin, delivered from the power of future sin, and have a destiny in Heaven.
“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,”
I Corinthians 15:3-4 NKJV
Today, many gospels have flooded what is modern Christianity, as flesh has invaded spiritual things. There is the American Gospel, the gospel of health, wealth and prosperity, promoted by Charismatics, New Apostolic Reformation folks, and a host of others. They offer a fleshly approach to the word of God, with lots of signs and wonders, strange manifestations, and lots of occultic, and new age additions. They use music as a lure, drawing the unsuspecting to drink their flavorful poison. If I were to mention names, I am sure some people would be offended.
Paul warned the Ephesian elders of things to come, once he had left the scene. He warned them to be on guard.
“Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.”
Acts 20:28-31 NKJV
In the case of the Ephesians, they were slow to listen as we see in Revelation, they had lost their first love.
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”
Revelation 2:4-5 NKJV
Sadly, there are many Ephesian churches, full of Ephesian Christian’s, who have left the love and worship of Christ, for the love and devotion to political candidates, and man made institutions.
Then there are the progressives, who seek to deny the penal-substitutional death of Jesus on the cross. They go even further, as they challenge the sinfulness of man, the virgin birth, and nearly all of the pillars of the faith.
Then there are the liberals who will tell you that all you need to do to be saved is “love” Jesus. No need to repent, no need to obey.
Even in the evangelical church, there is a softening, as many outlying practices have entered in, watering down the Gospel, deemphasizing sin, and giving rise to false professors, who think they are saved, but truly lost.
Some fundamentalists, once the backbone of the faith, have increasingly veered toward legalism, and hyper dogmatic positions, where works has been added to faith, postulating that performance has a role in salvation. This leads to judgement of others, and a tendency to write off those on the fringes of society as unreachable.
Brothers and sisters, let us be faithful to the Gospel, to focus on the fact that we are all sinners in need of a savior. The need and the urgency has never been greater. Pray for those in opposition.
