“No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, Just as we hope in You.”
Psalms 33:16-22 NKJV
Contingency
In the ongoing conduct of life, most of us have contingency plans, back ups, should the primary plan fail. We also create systems in our lives to be a safety net should the worst come to pass. We have health insurance, hopefully, that can assist should we become ill. insurance on our homes and cars, should there be some damage. And, ultimately, life insurance to ensure that those who come after us are taken care of when we are gone.
We put our faith in those contingencies, but often fail to acknowledge the One who governs all things. Regardless of what we do, God is still sovereign. He is in control, holding all things in His hand. We can have the greatest back up plans imaginable, but if God is not included, all could be lost.
Reading through Psalm 33 this morning, was a great reminder that God is truly in control.
There is great temptation to rely on ones own strength, or the power of earthly resources to make life better. This is the way of the world. As we watch in horror, the world is spinning out of control, as the world reaction to the pandemic, is causing ripple effects that are endangering everyone. Those who do not know God, do not know His blessing, and many of those who do, have forgotten.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed.”
Psalms 103:1-6 NKJV
I can attest to the faithfulness of God, as I have known Him in plenty, and in want, and He has never let me down.
In the midst of all that is happening, those of us who believe and trust the Lord have a great opportunity to proclaim to those who do not believe, the sufficiency of Christ. If ever there were a time to live by faith, it is now.
People are frightened and looking for answers. The evil one has ramped up his disinformation operation, as he too recognizes the times we are in. There are so many false teachers casting doubt on the Scriptures, and even if Jesus died for our sins at all. It is time for us to tell the world of the God of the Bible, the One who created Heaven and earth.
Every culture on the planet has a god awareness. Even the atheist behaves as if there is a God, for if there were not, there would be no atheists. There would be nothing for them to oppose.
I think of Paul in Acts chapter 17, sharing with Greek Scholars the glories of God. They had monuments to all the different gods, and one that simply said: To the unknown god.
“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.”
Acts 17:22-24 NKJV
Even though they did not know Him, the could sense His existence.
“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,”
Romans 1:20 NKJV
Brothers and sisters, let us be diligent to share the Gospel, the account of the God/Man who came into world to die for our sins. Each one us is a proof of God’s sovereignty, as each has gone from life dedicated to self, to life dedicated to Christ. We have a destination bound for Heaven and not hell.
Let us demonstrate in word and deed, our devotion and reliance on the Lord, as many are screaming out for solutions not found in worldly things, but only found in God.
“It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.”
Psalms 118:8-9 NKJV
