“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.”
Romans 5:12, 15 NKJV
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”
Romans 5:19 NKJV
I am at the time of life when one has more days to look back on, than days to look forward. I find myself reflecting on past accomplishments and past failures, pondering all the while all the “what ifs”.
What if I had not been destroyed through the sins of someone else, what if I had grown to be a normal human, with all the drives and desires for wife, family, and future, rather than being the hurt little boy constantly cowering in the corner.
Then there are the spiritual what ifs, like what if I had stayed in church, heard the Gospel, reponded, and spent my life worshipping Jesus, rather than myself. When I consider my life now, I am greatly regretful of all the years I wasted, that could have been used bringing glory to my Lord and leading many to Christ.
Inevitably, I find myself having to ponder the seminal what if: the Fall never happened and Adam and Eve obeyed God. I read more of Roman’s chapter five this morning, slowly chewing on its goodness, trying to get as much out of every morsel. When Adam sinned, we all became sinners, as his disobedience spread through his bloodline into all of humanity.
Everything in our world would be different, as there would be peace, no strife, no bigotry, no racism. We would likely be one people, with one spirit, all worshipping the same God, who would be with us and in us.
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
Ephesians 4:4-6 NKJV
“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Galatians 3:26-29 NKJV
In our flesh we are sons of Adam, fallen, lost, and bound up in sin. By faith we become sons of Abraham, made one in Christ, unified, members of one body, made of many parts.
“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”
Romans 12:4-5 NKJV
Our mission is to live as believers on mission to take the Gospel to the fallen world, impacted and corrupted by the fall of Adam. We are tasked with rewriting history, one soul at a time, as people come to Jesus and have their sins forgiven, their lives transformed, and spiritual what ifs of righteousness made real.
Going back to the big what if, in the garden of Eden, I know that there will be a day when that will move from being a what if, to being a reality, as Jesus returns to make all things new.
God has gven us a glimpse of what it will be like as He has given us His church. When all that are His are living in unity, walking in the Spirit, we reflect what God intended. In the future, that intent will be magnified to everyday life.
“And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 8:11 NKJV
My brothers and sisters, let us go about helping those who have not tasted the great salvation, rewrite their lives, to make the latter parts what God intended. Let us introduce them to Jesus, let us tell them of our own stories, our testimonies, of what God had done for us. We are trophies of God’s grace, new creatures, reclaimed from sin, and made to fulfill His holy purpose.
Jesus is coming again!
“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”
Revelation 22:1-5 NKJV
