“And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “ LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
II Kings 6:15-17 NKJVWide eyed
As a believer in Jesus Christ, I feel regularly surrounded by a vast enemy, as my beliefs run headlong into the prevailing culture of the day. I feel like I am a dead man walking, awaiting my brutal end with no thought for if, but only when.
I read of Elisha and his servant this morning. The Syrians were amassing against Israel and all seemed lost. The young servant was gripped by fear, as he looked at all the enemy troops.
Elisha, the prophet of the Most High God, knew whose he was, and advised the young man that there were far more with them than against. He prayed that the Lord would open the eyes of his servant.
In the frailty of my flesh, I can easily get lost on the frightening details that I see, become fearful or weary, and lose sight of the eternal truth:
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 NKJVWe who are the saved, the born again of the Spirit, have a great advantage over the young servant, and even over Elisha, as we know that God is for us, that He is with us, and that He is IN us. Wherever we go and whatever we encounter, He is in the midst of it. When I feel the adversary coming against me, I am reminded that the Lord will do the fighting for me.
I am protected in the Lord’s encampment, as there are supernatural beings filling every unseen space, as the Holy Spirit protects me from within, and the Lord’s angelic legions protect me from without. My life is in the sovereign hand of God, subject to His perfect will.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident. One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.”
Psalms 27:1-4 NKJVI seek to dwell in the house of the Lord, the house of my salvation, that Holy, serene place where I have the peace of God. The amazing thing about salvation in Jesus, is that my body became that house when Jesus saved me, that temple where I can dwell with God, and He with me.
No matter what I may face, He is there.
Brothers and sisters, let us open our eyes in these perilous times, and see the vast encampment of Jesus around us. We are not outnumbered! We have been given the Book, the true story of humanity, and we know how it ends.
Do not be overwhelmed by all that seems to be happening in our world, but remember that God is working in all of it. Nothing happens outside of His will. We need only carry out the commission that He has given us, to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. Jesus is with us in the midst of our mission. He has sovereignty and all authority in this world and in Heaven.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV“The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!”
