“Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”
Psalms 46:8-11 NKJV
Here we go again. There seems to be no peace in our world, as people find themselves in conflict, and those watching, find themselves reeling, as tumult seems to dominate our thoughts. Once again racial unrest has captured the nation. The unrest in Minneapolis is but a small sample of the strife that seems to be infecting the whole world.
In these times, I run to the Lord, seeking the peace that only He can bring. The more that is happening, and the more it makes me feel unstable, the more I cling to the Rock that is my firm foundation. He is my help.
“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah”
Psalms 46:1-3 NKJV
There are days when all that is happening begins to build up anxiety in me, and I find the peace I so covet, fading away. As I approach that breaking point, when flesh overpowers spirit, I am reminded from within to “be still”. It is the Holy Spirit reminding me that I am His, that my reality in this place and this time is only temporary, that eternity is my future.
There is great temptation in becoming frustrated when things seem to happen again and again. In truth, sinful people do sinful things, and they repeat that sinfulness again and again. It is not until Jesus transforms the heart, that people change.
In our fallen state we are given to wrath and fear, and both are destructive, as we tend to do things without thinking, full of emotion. We are compulsively evil, quick to kill, steal, and destroy. That is what happened Sunday afternoon.
We are in a season when things are going to happen quickly, as our world continues to devolve at a rapid rate. We are all caught up in the waves of change that are sweeping over the world like a massive tsunami. But, those of us who know the Lord have a God who is stable when all around us is unstable.
“There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”
Psalms 46:4-7 NKJV
Know believer, that God is your refuge, that you shall not be shaken. If you have been forgiven, and have been born again, you have God in you. You will not be shaken.
All that we are seeing are signs of God moving and preparing the earth for the return of His Son Jesus. Like fallow ground must be broken to make ready for planting, so our world must be broken to prepare the way for the Lord. He who is doing the breaking and tearing apart, is holding you together.
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.”
Colossians 1:16-18 NKJV
Jesus will rule and reign over it all. Let this knowledge bring you peace, comfort and confidence. As all seems to be falling apart, rejoice in that you know Jesus as your savior. If you don’t know Him, and you have not asked Jesus to forgive your sins, you can today. Today is the day of you salvation.
“For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,”
Psalms 95:7-8 NKJV
“For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
II Corinthians 6:2 NKJV
You too can be still and know that the Lord is God.
