““Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed. Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the LORD your God promised you, so the LORD will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.”
Joshua 23:14-15 NKJV
Living a full and complete life means accepting the good with the bad. We have the tendency to believe that God only brings blessing, and that the bad things only come from the evil one. in reality, God is sovereign and brings the good and the bad, according to His will.
Trials that come upon us are ordained by God to bring about His perfect will. When we are in the throes of trial, we seldom have the ability to comprehend why we are facing what we are going through.
Sometimes, the bad things that happen to us are a result of our disobedience, as we have moved from what God has saved us to do, to go after our own desires. We sin, we bear the consequence of that sin, we seek to get what we want by our own means, and the consequences are plentiful. One of the sad realities, is that we know instinctively, that what we are doing is wrong, but we do it anyway. As God is consistent, He brings about the consequence.
The children of Israel were told by Joshua what would happen if they did not keep the commandments of the Lord. God had delivered the nations to them, and had given them rest. He had blessed them beyond measure. Joshua told them that God would also bring harm in their disobedience.
““Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.”
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 NKJV
We are the spiritual decendents of the children of Israel, whose history is full of types and shadows for the New Testament believer. We have also been given the promise of a blessing and a curse, as we believers live according to, or against the precepts of God.
In examining the global Church today, it is easy to see the result of the curse of going away from God. Whole denominations have adopted the values of the world, and have lost their peculiarity. Those churches are filled with people who are indistinguishable from the world, and are not born again. Often they are woke or awakened, and not quickened by the Holy Spirit.
“But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.”
Revelation 2:14 NKJV
Too many of us have intermingled with those who have not tasted the great salvation of Jesus. Because of this, we have the same curse that is upon them. It can be very sad to see believers drawn away after their own lust. Lives are disrupted or destroyed, and witness diluted.
For those who do not know God, there is nothing but cursing, as all things lead to death. For those not in Christ, heaven is the here and now, as this is the best it will ever be.
Brothers and sisters, let us take heed to the lives of those in the Old Testament, and heed the warning of Joshua, as we too have a God who is sovereign, bringing the good and the bad. Just as He brings blessing to those who are obedient, so He brings harm to those caught up in sin. It may seem that He does not care about this sinful world, but judgement is coming, rest assured.
Let us be about the Father’s business, telling those who do not know Him of the blessings of salvation and the promise of Heaven, and the curse of and condemnation of sin and a future in hell.
Let us tell them about Jesus, who took the punishment for our sins, that we can be forgiven. Let us proclaim the Gospel while there is still time.
For those who are saved, there is no curse, as the price has already been paid.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Romans 8:1-4 NKJV
