Helper

““These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.”
‭‭John‬ ‭14:25-28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Helper

I remember when I was a hot mess. I was out of control, and full of internal strife as I tried to deal with all the things that the evil one had brought into my life. Sin enveloped me and infused me, and it battered me from without as I felt the effects of all that I did and all that had been done to me. I was a walking, open wound, striking out others verbally. I was isolated.

In those days I had no Helper, no one to assist me with all the things that had so ensnared me. Finally, Jesus caught me and saved me, beginning His transformation of my soul. When I came to Jesus, my world became smaller and I found myself even more alone. I was no longer the entertaining spectacle I was in my youth, but now a reformed demoniac, sitting clothed and in my right mind.

In the isolation, the Holy Spirit became my only friend, convicting and refining me, as demons were purged one at a time. I had been saved by Jesus, who I could not see, could not touch, but was changing me from the inside out, regardless. I was living by faith.

The disciples in John 14 were faced with the reality that Jesus was soon going away. He assured them that they would have a Helper and that they would not be alone. In speaking to them, He was speaking down through the ages, as we who have believed after them, continue in the faith. In many ways we have the greater blessing, because we did not have the chance to see Him, touch Him, sup with Him.

“And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.””
‭‭John‬ ‭20:28-29‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Because of the Helper, Christians down through the ages have held on to faith in the most dire of circumstances. In countries where it could be a death sentence for having a bible, the Helper is empowering believers and saving many. He gives us strength to stand and proclaim the Gospel.

I read a few weeks ago that Christian persecution unto death had increased 19 percent in 2020. I read long ago that more Christians died in the last one hundred years, than in the previous 1800 plus years before.

It seems like the Holy Spirit does His work best when the body of Christ is under assault, when we are crying out to Him for our daily strength. In times of ease, we do not seek the Helper, and we find ourseves leaning more on our own strength. In this time of weakness, the enemy can strike and we fall, taking our testimony down with us.

In these perious times, we are facing trouble, but let us not lose heart. We must remember the Helper, the One who is with us and in us.

It is time to return to walking with the Lord in the Spirit. It is time to confess sins, to return to the word of God, and do what it says. When we walk in the spirit, we experience the power and presence of Jesus, walking with us through this dying world.

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16-17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

We are surrounded by fleshly temptation pushing us to consider spiritual shortcuts that lead only to destruction and the diminishing of the power of the Gospel.

The Helper does not come to us unprepared and unarmed. We are in a state of war with powers that are not flesh and blood. All the issues that we are facing today are not political, nor social, nor things that can be fixed by the right representatives in congress, or presidency, but by the body of Christ crying out to God.

The church has become weak, and we have largely forgotten about the Helper. We have also forgotten to pull on the armor in our own individual lives as we face a supernatural foe.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:10-12‬ ‭NKJV‬

Let us call on the Helper and do what we were commissioned to do. Let us be the light in the darkness, before the darkness overwhelms the light. Let us also be encouraged, as He has told us that He is coming back. Let us rejoice and hold fast to that promise!

  1. Love that Galatians five scripture! This also came to mind from your closing:

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”
    ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭37:5-6‬ ‭ESV‬‬
