“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book? When I cry out to You, Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me.”
Psalms 56:3-9 NKJV
There have been days when I have felt surrounded by enemies, seemingly too numerous to count. In the midst of these times, I have found myself hiding myself away, attempting in vain to seek the safety of solitude. All too often, those who seek to number my steps, seek after me, and find me.
As I have grown in the faith I have found that God is present and for me in those situations when I feel encircled and there appears to be no way out. I take comfort in knowing that God is aware of everything, that He is my Palmoni, my Wonderful Numberer, so intimate with all my ways.
He has numbered my days, He numbers my tears, and has numbered the hairs on my head. He is so completely aware of me. Each single cell of my being is numbered and loved.
“O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.”
Psalms 139:1-4 NKJV
I have a profound peace, even in times of trouble. When my detractors whisper and gossip about me in hushed tones, I know that my God hears and counts it toward them for reckoning later. I have no need to worry, I need not fear, for I know that He is for me.
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.”
Romans 8:31-33 NKJV
Brothers and sisters, we are here to serve the Lord. Just as the world hated Jesus, we too will be hated. There are forces gathering even now that are against us. They will lie against us, they will twist our words, they will mark our steps. They will seek to take away our rights.
There are those who are looking at the storming of the capitol as a reason to begin considering those who call upon the name of the Lord as “Christian Nationalist”, or domestic terrorists, and look upon that tragic event of January sixth as the modern equivelent of the burning of the Reichstag. I am sure that even now, there are those who are planning their own Kristalnacht, as they seek to usher in the extermination of believers.
You might be thinking: “my politics are different from those folks at the capitol,” . I can tell you, there will be no line of distinction. If you are a Christian, you will be persecuted. The rhetoric I have heard is very broad and all inclusive.
Jesus told us this would come to pass, and we know that we have security in heaven. I can tell you as one who has known the constant drumbeat of hate, that the Lord looks after His own. I know that He is faithful. Come what may, we win.
What do we say in these times? How do we live?
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 NKJV
Remember that God is for you, that He is your Palmoni, your Wonderful Numberer, who has everything in His control. Nothing can separate us from His love.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:35, 37-39 NKJV
