“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”
Psalms 46:1-11 NKJV
Based on what I have seen in social media, I would have to say that the devil is winning. Many of us are consumed with staring at all the signs of coming destruction. We see something and we immediately are cast down and driven into fear. With the mere glance at a headline, we take our eyes off God, and look to the problems that we perceive off on the horizon.
We quickly forget to look up.
As I opened my bible plan for the morning, I was delighted to find Psalm 46. In that passage, I was immediately reminded: God is a very present help in time of trouble. I know all too well that He is a true help, as I have known much trouble, and much trevail. I have lived a life where I have often fallen so far down, that everything is up.
God has told us what is to come in His word. We know that our world has been given over to the devil, that everything would wax worse and worse, and that there would come a day when all would appear completely desolate.
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”
II Timothy 3:1-5 NKJV
The times that we are living in are like a check list for all the evils listed in II Timothy three. All have been crossed off. All has been infused into the very fabric of our society. Sadder still, we can find these in the church.
Even as the shadow of the coming doom looms over the world we live in, let us look to the hills.
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.”
Psalms 121:1-8 NKJV
Brothers and sisters, we know where our help comes from. We know that we have a Savior in Jesus Christ, who faced all the temptations that we have faced, but had no sin. We know that He suffered, that He died, that He rose again. We know that Jesus alone can save.
Most important of all, we know that Jesus is coming again.
We are in the pains of childbirth. Sure, as a man I can’t possibly know about that. I did pass a blood clot through a catheter once. Had to be close. Levity aside, We are in perilous times. In these days, let us seek the truth of God’s word and remember that nothing catches God off guard.
“Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’”
Isaiah 46:9-10 NKJV
““And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.””
Revelation 22:12-13 NKJV
Let us find rest in the Lord, knowing that He will never leave us or forsake us. Be reminded of that as the anxieties build, and there is great temptation to look down from the hills and fix our eyes on the things happening around us.
