“Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established.”
Proverbs 16:3 NKJV
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:15-21 NKJV
I shudder when I think of my earliest days in the faith. I worked really hard to guide the ship, and steer my faithlife where I wanted it to go. I was not surrendered. I thought I could direct the outcomes, all the while, allowing little pockets for my chosen sins. I reserved space for my pride, which affected every aspect of my spiritual life.
In those days, I was like a drunken sailor, stumbling about, meandering all over the place, and not really making any headway in christian maturity. It was a thrill ride, filled with peaks and valleys. I had no stability, and I often found myself struggling to secure a good understanding of the doctrines of the faith.
“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:6-8 NKJV
I was the epitome of double mindedness, as I sought in vain to have one foot in the spirit and one in the flesh. I battled for balance, and often fell down in a sin stained heap.
As time went by, I began to make the Lord my priority, as His word began to move aside the thoughts and impulses of the world. As the word began to envelop my will, I found that I no longer stumbled about, and my steps became more focused. No more tripping in the darkness, as God’s word lit my path.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”
Psalms 119:105 NKJV
We are living a time when the way that we walk is filled with obstacles and other things that can cause us to misstep. It is time for those who call upon the name of the Lord to begin seeking the word of God as our first reference, by which we examine everything else.
We are in a time of knee jerk reactions, where people become emotional and fly off the handle. In the heat of emotions, contact is lost, and we become armed fortresses, preparing for battle. The desire to share the Gospel is lost as we are consumed by lesser concerns such as politics or tribalism.
Brothers and sisters, we are established by God through Jesus Christ. God in human form, came to earth, living a sinless life to die for our sins, taking a punishment that we deserve. The mere gift of God’s wonderful grace is more than enough reason to lay aside our ususal thinking, and seek the Lord to establish our comings and goings.
Jesus is our role model. He was rejected by His creation, doubted by some of His disciples, and in these turbulent times, ignored by many who profess to be believers. Yet, we went to the cross to die for the sins of the world. In the coming days we will be rejected, we will be doubted, we will be ignored, if we are lucky.
In the face of such things , we must be steadfast in sharing the Gospel without fail.
“Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.”
Revelation 3:10-11 NKJV
Those of us who have called upon the name of the Lord for salvation have been established in Heaven. We know that our home is assured, and that we can have confidence in Jesus. Let us live accordingly, and represent Jesus in all that we do.
Let the word of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives be reflected in how we live, and establish our plans, that our priority be the sharing of the Gospel.
“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
Ephesians 4:20-24 NKJV
