Those who serve the Lord live in peril. To stand for the Gospel is to enter hostille territory and face the onslaught of those who follow the evil one. When we go out and bring the Good New of Jesus, we are liberators, ones bring a message of freedom to captives held by sin.
In the Old Testament, Egypt is a type for sin, of bondage, of life enslaved. As I moved through Exodus this morning, I was reminded of all the people who came into my life, in the spirit of Moses, who entered the Egypt that enslaved me, to petition God, to move on the Pharaoh of my soul to let me go.
These people were heroes, people doing the work of Moses, bringing the story of a different life, a new life in Christ. I am sure that they had many concerns as to what to say. I am sure they found themselves worrying about all things they didn’t know, about any potential questions that could be asked. Yet, the spoke up, and my heart listened.
God is faithful to give us what we need day by day to share the Gospel. I remember being bed bound at Mayo Clinic years ago, and the daily opportunities God gave me to witness.
I remember being awakened around three in the morning each day for blood work, and each morning I had a different phlebotomist, a new chance to tell someone about my Lord Jesus and what He did for me. I never worried about the words, and He was faithful to give me the mouth to deliver the Gospel.
Brothers and sisters, we are nearing the zero hour. Week in and week out, I hear from someone about the tension they are feeling, the foreboding, the sense that major things are soon to happen. They speak of the oppression on them, and the turmoil erupting in their lives. The evil one is pushing his team into a full court press, as time is running out.
As the pressure mounts, we have an increased urgency to share the Gospel, and lead as many to Jesus as we can. It is not a time to pass the ball around and run the clock out. We need to score.
There are believers around the world who are facing imminent death for speaking the words of freedom, of how Jesus died for our sins on the cross, was buried and rose again, of the freedom bought by the sacrifice and the power to turn from sin.
Don’t worry what you will say when the Lord provides you the opportunity. Know that He will. I think of Stephen, faced with a mob that wanted his blood, but he opened his mouth and took the Gospel message, presented to mere humans by a God/Man, and forwarded it to those enslaved by sin.
“And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.”
Acts 6:8-10 NKJVJust as Jesus went to the cross for the sins of humankind, Stephen became the first martyr, as that message was made manifest by the shedding of his own blood.
“Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.”
Luke 23:34 NKJV“Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.”
Acts 7:60 NKJVMany of us have been called to take up our crosses and follow Jesus. Many more of us will in the days, weeks and months to come. May we be faithful.
When the time comes, let us be faithful to open our mouths and utter forth speech with power of the Holy Spirit.
