“Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.”
Genesis 15:3-6 NKJVPromise
I exist on the promises of God. I know that each day I can rely on His being there, because He has promised that He would never leave me or forsake me. I know that I can read His word with faith, leaning on the reality that God is always faithful, even when I am not.
When a person comes to know the Lord it is by faith, not by any temporal certainty that we can see, or hear or taste or touch, but by evidences surrounding us. I know from the rising of the sun, to the stars coming out at night that God is present, as His hand is everywhere. I can also look back at my past and see where He has guided me, and carried me.
I love Genesis chapter 15, as it encapsulates the faithfulness of God. In this chapter, we see the foundation of the faith, that moment when Abram had faith in God, and it was counted to him for righteousness, and he was saved. It is the very picture of salvation, as God, a theophony, preincarnate Christ, visited with Abram and made him a promise. He took him out to see the stars, too numerous to number, and assured Abram that his descends would be thus so.
I sit here today as one of those stars.
If you are one who has called upon the name of the Lord Jesus for salvation, you are heir to the promise, and a spiritual descendent of Abram. We have approached God by faith, and asked for our sins to be forgiven. We live by faith and seek Him in His word, and in prayer. We have been filled with the Holy Spirit to help live empowered and transformed. God’s faithfulness still holds, and still delivers on the promise.
“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
Galatians 3:26-29 NKJVI am thankful for the Old Testament, as it is the foundation of the new. I take steps of faith in my own life, buttressed by evidences of God’s faithfulness in the past. I know that the God who was faithful to Abram, later Abraham, will be faithful to me.
I need not fear as He calls me out to take steps into uncertainty. Instead of moving into a distant, unknown land, I go forth to share the Good News of the Gospel with strangers. I take the step of faith in devoting more of my to prayer and bible reading. I ask the Lord to root out the sin in my life that is keeping me from being all that I can be sharing my testimony. I can walk by faith, just as Abraham did.
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
Hebrews 11:8-10 NKJVBrothers and sisters, go out and look at the stars, and be reminded that it is same sky that Abraham looked at with God, and know that you are part of that promise. Remember that you are joint heirs with Jesus, and that you have been given the Good News. Go out and share it with others, that they also inherit the promise.
We are in perilous times, and the coming of the Lord is near. Let us go out and share with urgency, and bring the message of the God/Man who came to earth, lived a sinless life, and died for our sins. He is the sacrifice who paid for our sinfulness on the cross.
Unbeliever, you too can be saved. Imagine all the things you have ever done being forgiven, wiped away. Imagine your life transformed, changed, made new. I live each day by the grace of God. I have the joy of entering life anew, not borne down by past sin, guilt, and shame, but free in Christ. Yes there are struggles, but there is also strength, and a sense that I will find a greater future that has been promised.
There is coming a day when I will be with Jesus, and there will be no more sin, no more pain, no more death. You can begin that journey today.
“And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
