“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!” So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther commanded him.”
Esther 4:14-17 NKJV
For such a time as this
There are books of the bible that excite me when they show up in my reading plan. No matter how many times I have read it, Esther is always a joy for me, as it is increasingly relevant to the believer today. I am thankful that God gave us the Old Testament as a foundation of our faith. There are so many types and shadows, that we can use by way of application as we live as New Testament believers.
As I have said at every opportunity, we are living in perilous times. There is great temptation for those who believe to be silent, to say nothing of the slaughter of innocents, to vote along with the world, to look the other way when we hear of the killing of Christians in far off lands. We do this in the hope that we will not be noticed, that somehow we will be able to live in an increasingly hostile world, hidden from view. In reality, we will all perish, whether we are silent or not.
God, give me the courage of Esther!
We serve a great God who is sovereign, and He is going to be victorious whether we speak up or not. He is also a gracious God as He has given us the opportunity to take part in the work. Many of us have a decision to make in the coming weeks, months and years, if we have that long, as we will see an increase in persecution of those who have been saved by the blood of Jesus. Even now, there are voices chiming up to make assault on religious liberty, calling it hate. In the coming time of tribulation, we will have to decide to speak loudly of the Gospel, to stand for our values.
Even in the body of Christ, there are people who want to compromise, to go along with the “law of the land”, and not be offensive. Esther could have tried to remain silent, but Mordecai assured her that even in silence she and her people would perish. She decided to stand for what was right. She resolved to speak up. “If I perish, I perish.”
Oh God, please give me the courage of Esther!
Years ago I resolved to stand for my faith no matter what. I daily reaffirm that stance as I seek to tell all the story of the God/Man who came and died for our sins, and was buried and rose again. I am steadfast for such a time as this. Believers, resolve to be like Esther, and decide today that you too will stand for your faith regardless of what may come. May it be heard from the heart cry of all those who call on the name of the Lord, “If we perish, we perish!”
Dark days are coming to the body of Christ, we must be also about praying. I love the way Esther urged her people to fast and pray, to seek the Lord. If ever you wanted to begin praying, it is now. There will be war on believers in the coming weeks and months here in the US, just as it is for those in other countries. It is going to take the power of God to get us through. The good news is that we win. The battle is in taking as many with us as possible.
Pray for the missionaries who are already in places where they can be in danger. Pray for those who have endeavored to be intercessors, as we are on the front lines and I personally can attest to the evil ones constant oppression. Pray for pastors and teachers, leaders and such, as they are also under tremendous pressure. I am praying for many pastors who are struggling. Pray for those who appear to be teetering toward the world. Pray that they have their eyes opened to see the dangers lurking under the bright lights of the world.
Brothers and sisters, our time here is short. Let us redeem every moment for the glory of God and be about the Father’s business of sharing the Gospel. Let us not embrace the values of the world, but embrace His truth. Let the bible be your guide and be not ashamed. Let us go out and preach it boldly!
“I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
