Decided

“Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:35-40‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Decided

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.
-Sundar Singh

“I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord,” he said, “but, like Him, I want no home, no possessions. Like Him I will belong to the road, sharing the suffering of my people, eating with those who will give me shelter, and telling all men of the love of God.”
-Sundar Singh

There are passages in the bible that deeply affect me. One that brings me to me to tears is this passage from Hebrews. I invariably find myself crying as I ponder the lives of those who have gone before me in the faith. I think of those who went through so much, long before the cross of Christ, and I consider it forshadowing for those today who are enduring the same level of torture and persecution as before. Yet, still, they say yes to Jesus.

I sit here in my living room, surrounded by bibles, commentaries, and things that are forbidden in much of the world. I can enjoy my worship music each morning, and have no fear of someone breaking into my home to take me off to jail. At least not yet. I am spoiled. Instead of being concerned about freedom, the spread of the Gospel, and spiritual life, all too often, I might find myself complaining about some other teacher’s methods, or the lifestyles of other believers. Worse I am consumed with things of this world that really don’t matter in the light of eternity.

That passage in Hebrews reminds me that there are concerns far more pressing than the things I give my time and energy to in the conduct of my life. There are so many things I can chase after in this world. But, I have decided to follow Jesus.

The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
No turning back, no turning back.

This world is passing away. In the streets, we can hear the pained cries of people dying inside, screaming for justice, that will not come. We are a nation of polarized people, fighting over the cooling corpse of America. The division cannot be overcome, and any attempt will lead to a totalitarian regime. The morals of the world have eroded and decayed to the point that any thing goes. There are no limits, not even ones that serve to preserve life. All is on the sacrificial table. In the face of all of this, I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back.

Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
Though none go with me, still I will follow;
No turning back, no turning back.

There was a time when many sought to follow Jesus. Now most, eschew the Lord and chase after other gods. The bible in many a home collects dust, is seldom read, never really studied, and the values within are forsaken. As I seek to walk through this life, I feel like a rebel, the ultimate outcast, as the world careens to oblivion. I cling to the bible. But, I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back.

My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.

Each day, I have decided. Each day I rise and take up my cross. I die to self, and put aside my fleshly wants and desires, and seek the righteousness of Christ. My flesh has failed me so many times. God never has. In Christ, I find the sure thing, He that never fails. I live to tell others of eternal life in heaven through salvation in Jesus. I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back.

Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
No turning back, No turning back.

If you feel like you have no hope, there is abundant hope in Jesus. He went to cross for our sins, and paid the debt that we owe. Through faith in Him, you too can follow Jesus, and know the deepest peace imaginable. Imagine being forgiven of all your sins, all the bad things that you ever did, washed away by the shed blood of Jesus.

Hebrews chapter 11 is full of stories of those who went before us, having not seen the cross. They knew of the promise, but did not see it realized. We who come to Christ today have the advantage of salvation, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. God has given us the power to follow Jesus.

Sundar Singh, knew of that power. He forsake everything to follow Jesus, though he faced persecution. Even in the face of loss of all things, he went out and spread the Gospel. He decided to follow Jesus! Decide for yourself today!

No turning back, no turning back!
