Leveled up

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
‭‭II Peter‬ ‭1:2-4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Leveled up

Gaming is one of the most popular, and apparently lucrative, pursuits in our culture today. Many people spend hours and hours playing a game in the hopes of getting so good at it that they are granted access to higher and higher levels. The games can be all consuming, as I have heard of gamers wearing adult diapers so they don’t have to stop and go to the bathroom. Many have gotten so good, that they go to tournaments and make lots of money in winnings.

Many aspects of everyday life reflect a real time video game, as people go about doing the things they do in the hope of getting better, making more money and capturing higher levels in pursuit of the American dream. Like in the world of gaming, the effort is all consuming as many ignore all aspects of life in pursuit of the goal. Families fall apart, relationships fail, and in the end there can be little satisfaction.

For some people, even the spiritual life can be filled with the same kind of striving, the pursuit of some fleshly goal. Get that bible degree, read through that bible in a year, be that soul winner, have that “godly” reputation, and the perfect family. All these things are good, but they cease to be godly if the pursuit is fueled by pride and that is all there is. Walking by faith is different in than life in gaming in one key area. God has done the leveling up for us.

When I began this walk of faith, I went about pursuing it like every other part of my life. I sought to perform. I hoped that God would see my effort and look upon me with favor. I also hoped that others would see me, and grant me the respect I desired. I was seeking the favor of people. It was all a smoke screen to hide the obvious dysfunction inside me that I tried so desperately to hide.

In my reading this morning, I was reminded once again that God has given me everything I need to be a successful christian. His grace saved me, His Holy Spirit empowers me, His word guides my every step, and fellowship with His children provides me the love and accountablity I need to follow. In Christ, I have the power to walk circumspectly, to walk in power and resist the temptations of this age.

I have found that I don’t have to work to stay on top of the game, the Lord lifts me, He adds to my score, He helps me to win the game. All I need to do is abide. The more I rely on the Lord, the easier it is to live for Him. He gives me the power. By His might, reading His word is not a chore, praying is a joy, and obedience comes easy, as I can see the worthlessness of my efforts as compared to what I can do by the power of God. I have to admit, that it also requires that I get out of the way. I have found that there is great blessing in humiliation, as God has bowed me low, that He be exalted.

My brothers and sisters, God has given you all that you need for life and godliness. More than that, He will never love you more or love you less. You can go into this uncertain world with confidence. That confidence is what propels me into each day, through each moment, and gives me daily peace regardless of what may come. We are living in preilous times, and the future on earth is bleak.

But God…

Because you have the all that you need, you have an obligation to put it into use as we are living in a world where people are in dire need of the Gospel. Ours is a world awash in striving, seeking after an upper hand, an advantage, in the fight over a declining country. People are battling over faded glory. Those of us who believe know of One whose glory will never fade, whose dominion is everlasting. We need to tell them all.

Flawed polliticians make empty promises, but God’s promises are precious, and great indeed. We have the promise of eternity with Jesus. Draw near to the Lord today!

  1. Thank you Bernie! Would you pray for us please? It appears that there is an ongoing battle of trying to “level up“ in our marriage. It’s grueling and wearying. Would you please pray that the Lord would humble me and at least Make me a peacemaker when this happens? Thanks so much my friend! I prayed for you today.
