Riot shield

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:10-13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Riot shield

We are being blasted. There are days when I feel like I am under fire from the moment I get out of bed to the moment I hide under the covers at the end of the day. There is an endless assault on my being, on my intelligence, on my morality, and on my common sense. External forces are bent on making me believe that down is up, that the evil is good, and that it is okay to steal, kill, and destroy.

The fiery darts are coming at me constantly. I am thankful for the shield of faith to get me through each day. No matter what I endure, I know that my salvation is sure and that God is for me. My salvation is not based on what I happen to be feeling on a given day, but in the facts laid out in the bible. I know that I know that I know, that my sins have been forgiven.

The evil one is the accuser of the brethren, the brothers and sisters in Christ. He lives to point fingers at us and remind us of the sinners we were, and of the lapses that we have. I have had times when the darts have gotten past my shield and wounded me. In that moment of injury, guilt and shame came over me and I felt inadequate to share the message of the Gospel, or make a defense of the faith. The evil one yelled “hypocrite!” in my ear, to shut my mouth. Covered by the shield of faith, I know that my sins have been forgiven, that my guilt and shame were taken to the cross by Jesus.’

Prayer break: I cannot fathom all of this, Lord. You took all of the penalty for me. I am undone.

When the evil one makes his charges, prosecutes his case against me, Jesus interjects and declares, “I died for him. He is mine!” If ever there was a time when the shield of faith is crucial it is now. Just as we have seen unrest in the streets, there is also unrest in the spiritual realm, as the evil one is making his move against the throne of the Most High.

I have a lot of empathy for the police these days, as they are facing much reviling based on the unfortunate actions of a few. As a Christian, I am reviled because of the actions of a few outspoke, unloving, probably unsaved, people professing to know Christ, but not moved by the Spirit.

Like the police, we must still go out there. They keep the order and rescue people needing help, and we are seeking to rescue people from eternity in hell. I don’t want to speculate on what life would be like in the majority black neighborhoods with no policing. Gangs would have free reign, innocents would die, until the righteous residents rise up, armed, and begin shedding blood, as vigilante death squads would patrol, and all would devolve into a dystopian reality that no one wants.

We Christians are meant to be the guardians in the spiritual realm, as we bring the word of God, prayer, and values of Kingdom into the world. Those of us who are interscessors, have an invisible impact that won’t be known until we are gone. At that point, all restraints will be gone. No one will be safe. That time is coming…soon.

Believers, remember that you have a shield of faith, a shield that protects you from the onslaught of the evil one, that helps you to stand firm in these dark days. It is your spiritual riot shield. Not only does it protect you, but it allows you to advance the Gospel to a world in dire need of the story of the God/Man who came to live as one of us, was reviled, who went to the cross to die for our sins, and rose again on the third day. Go forth and tell all of the great salvation, of the forgiveness of sins.

My people, stand firm in the fire! Shields up!

THE PRAYER CHAIR IS OPEN! Send me your requests!

  1. So true, “ endless assault on my being, on my intelligence, on my morality, and on my common sense.” He definite devolution into dystopia.

Great picture of the jobs that the shield has. I never thought of that. “A shield that protects you from the onslaught of the evil one, that helps you to stand firm in these dark days.”

Thanks as always Bernie! Great encouragement!!
