American idols

“In that day a man will cast away his idols of silver And his idols of gold, Which they made, each for himself to worship, To the moles and bats, To go into the clefts of the rocks, And into the crags of the rugged rocks, From the terror of the LORD And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily. Sever yourselves from such a man, Whose breath is in his nostrils; For of what account is he?”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭2:20-22 NKJV

“It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD Than to put confidence in princes.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭118:8-9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

American idols

It is so easy to find oneself worshipping idols. Idols are anything or anyone that we place higher than God. I, like so many others, worshipped at the idol of self. I carved my god in my own image, and I relied on it for my daily guidance and protection.

I remember when I was in high school, I had my own slogan that pledged allegiance to my god. I reveled in my ability to stand alone, me against the world. I remember writing it with fancy caligraphy in art class. My god was forged by years of abuse and punishment from peers, who sought to destroy me. Though I thought this God to be all powerful, time would reveal how faulty it really was.

When I entered the crises of life I found that my chosen, and self created god was worthless. It was only powerful as long as I was. Some of us have chosen other gods than the one of self. They worship people and institutions. They worship at the temple of government, of church, of family or of spouse and an infinite number of other temples. Ultimately all these temples crumble, and their gods fail.

I spent some time this morning in Isaiah, chapter two. It describes the person who has forged many gods and relies on them to make life good and defend against peril. As the chapter proceeds, we find that those God’s have no standing against God almighty. Suddenly the person who has chased after other gods, runs for the hills as his petty, self made gods fail.

We are urged to seek after the one true God.

Our world is in turmoil. We are facing many things this year and many more are to come. Many of us are flocking to idols of flesh and blood to deliver us from our fears. We are bowing down to American idols who we hope have all the answers. In reality, the idols are capricious, as changeable as the weather. They make pronouncements, dial them back, and make more. The worshippers hang on every word. Meanwhile, they turn away from the One who really has the answers. His answers are timeless and do not change. Even better, they are written down.

I love Psalm 118:8-9. It is the exact midpoint of the bible. There are one thousand, one hundred and eighty eighty verses before and that many after. I think God put it there for a reason, as if to remind us that men, and women will let us down. So will princes, and presidents, governors, and mayors. They are faulty idols of flesh and blood, prone toward human fraility. Many of us are looking for a savior, to take on the enemy and bring us victory. God has already done that. He has brought us Jesus.

Unlike Donald Trump or Joe Biden, or any other candidate, Jesus went to the cross for our sins. He was killed by the establishment, was buried in a tomb and rose again on the third day. As I have have walked through this life, as one saved by the grace of God, I have seen time and time again, how my Jesus has delivered me. He has provided for me as no program ever could, He has given me a future and a hope. I know that I can rest in Him.

Believers, set the idols down. Place your focus on Jesus, who paid the sin debt He did not owe, for we who owed and could not pay. I can tell you that this country is going to explode regardless of who wins. The carnage will be spectacular. The year 2021 will make this year look fun. Seek the Lord today. He is the only hope we have.
