“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:22-26‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Tumultuous. That is an apt description of the state of affairs in our country right now. We are all caught up in conflict, turmoil, and fraught with problems. We are either denying there are problems or we are exaggerating the true extent of them. Some are screaming that they won’t comply with the government, even though the bible says we are supposed to. We are being dragged down. We are on a ship that is sinking, regardless of the captain we elect in the fall.

I am sad to say that I have seen so many of my fellow believers caught up in all the struggle. So many of them are taking sides, disputing over things that really are not of concern for the household of faith. I am thankful that I am an independent. I have no dog in the fight.

In the social melee, it is hard to tell the difference between the believers and the non believers. All are given over to the flesh and disputing. I have seen people that I have worshipped with, lie about issues to prove their cause. I once had someone complain that I always had the tendency to bring God into situations. As a believer, God is a part of everything.

Back in my working days, I had this plaque on the wall next to my office door. It had the fruit of the Spirit on it. I used to look at that as I left my office to go out and check on my clients. It was a daily remainder that I was not of this world, that I was of an alien race occupying human space. I had a very challenging group of clients, and I needed to be reminded that I could call upon the Lord so that I represented Him correctly.

I still have that plaque, on the wall next to my front door. It is a handy reminder when salesman and political types come a knocking. I have found that the fruit of the Spirit is essential as we go out into this increasingly hostile world. I cannot forget that I am an ambassador of Jesus Christ. I must represent my Savior to a lost and dying world in need to salvation.

Things are so dark, that I become bright as sun as I move aside and show the fruit of my salvation. The message of the Gospel becomes irresistible, as it stands in contrast to the deep troubles filling our time.

The world needs love in a time of acrimony, joy in sadness, peace for all, patience between adversaries, and whole lot of kindness. The fruit of the Spirit is what the world needs. We are the planters of the seeds, that then comes to harvest.

Believers, remember whose you are. Remember that this world is but a momentary stop, and that you must be about leading people to Jesus. We are on a rescue mission. We are not here to set up some kind of earthly kingdom for Jesus. He will do that Himself in due time. We are to rescue souls from the coming fire.

Sometimes it means taking a hit for the team, suffering a loss, being defrauded, suffering gossip, defamation and lies. It is worth it for the good of the Kingdom.

Ask the Lord to help you grow the fruit. I will warn you, being fruitful often means there will be some pruning. The abundant crop that results makes it all worth while!
