“I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.”
Psalms 121:1-8 NKJV
Months ago I encountered this passage and I reflected at a time when my life was routine. In the time since, we have all experienced life not routine. In reality, our lives have been turned upside down. In all the struggle, the greatest truth has been confirmed: God is in control!
I awake to the unknown everyday, but I know where my help comes from. I know that my God is above the highest hills and He knows all that is going on in the world. He knows what is coming and I am confident that He is going to walk me through it all. I foresee a vast darkness that will envelop the world, far darker than anything we have ever faced. But I also see the power of God being made more manifest than at any time before.
Our God will not slumber or sleep, and He will carry us through everything. I can attest to His faithfulness and His love. I know that I can boldly proclaim the Gospel to the world, and not worry about the consequences that I may face. My God made heaven and earth, He made the sinner and the saint, He made the persecutor and the persecuted. He is in control.
The Lord has presented us an open window to present the Gospel to a world full of people seeking answers to long-standing questions. I know that the word of God is perfect and handles all things well. We are to inject the divine into the secular, to deal with civil realities with the power of God.
All of the problems we face are symptoms of sins hold on the world that live in, and the only way to deal with those sins is the presentation of the Good News that Jesus came to seek and to save what was lost. He died on the cross, was buried and rose again. In that resurrection, came the power to not sin, the power to redress wrongs and to bring true equality to the world. He is the leveler of the ground.
He is above the fray.
Believers, I know that these times are so troubling. I know from the prayer chair that many of you are struggling, but know that God is for you. Keep looking to the hills, keep looking to the one who knows the end from the beginning. Remember that regardless of why may come, you who call on the name of the Lord have the final victory: you have a place in Heaven.
I urge you to continue to pray for each other, for our leaders regardless of party, for the president whether you like him or not, and for law enforcement people. Pray for the protesters. I sense they are being used by forces they can not comprehend, for outcomes that are not what they are expecting.
We are in the midst of a pandemic, wracked by racial and civil strife and facing the most divisive issues election in the nation’s history. Regardless of the winner, this nation will explode.
He is the God on the hill and He can see what we cannot. He sees the other side. I trust in Him to guard me and guide me. I find great conscience as I open His word and am constantly reminded that He is faithful. He will be there for me forevermore.
That is the promise that gives me the strength to walk into each day and face what may come. Do not be fearful. We serve a great God! We have a great salvation! The fury of God was poured out on Jesus, that we who believe may have peace. Live in that truth!
Just as I am finishing this, a great hymn came up on my stereo. The lyrics go like this:
O love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee.
I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine oceans depths its flow.
May richer fuller be.
O light followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee.…
What a blessing! It is like the Lord reminding me that He is here.
Be bold today! Pray, proclaim, tell someone about the perfect love of Christ! Keep looking up!
THE PRAYER CHAIR IS OPEN! Send me your requests!
