We are seeing our sin up close. Like most humans, we desire look away from what we are seeing, to somehow find some excuse to not feel the urgency to change. The news this morning has been full of stories about George Floyd’s arrest record. It is like they are trying to say, that because he was less than perfect, it was okay for him to die. In reality, it doesn’t matter what kind of person he was. The video of the events leading up to his death more than provide evidence of wrong doing.

I see the whole thing as the death of a human being at the knee of another human being, both sinful and flawed. It was the sin of Adam manifested. That story is played out everyday in the world we live in.

I don’t care about Floyd’s arrest record, or the number of complaints that Chauvin had. I only care about the inhumanity on display. I also care about how that inhumanity has been used by the evil one to give opening to destroy a nation.

As I have said previously, we wrestle not with flesh and blood. We are dealing with spiritual forces, that are only oriented toward the destruction of all parties. What we are seeing around the world is that effort to so distract the body of Christ, that we ourselves are caught up in it.

We are seeing evil. Many of us are asked, “why does God permit evil in the world?” People wonder why he doesn’t get rid of it. Our God is a sovereign God and He ordains evil to be among us. It is here to remind of us of sin.

I liken sin to the gas that fuels our furnaces and our stoves. Gas is odorless. Imagine if you had a gas leak and you could not smell it. If it didn’t suffocate you, it would blow your house up. But the gas company puts that stinky odor in the gas. We all have been conditioned to think, “GAS!” when we smell the odor. We take action, turn off gas, open windows or escape the house. God has given evil as the odor of sin. We see evil, we think SIN! It is a call to action. The Gospel is the only way to deal with sin.

The death of George Floyd was a call to action. We saw sin in all its darkness. It is a warning: we must be about the Father’s business. The rioting is a further warning, the gas is building, everything could blow.

Now is the time to pray for those who do not know the Lord. We are smelling the gas in the house. If we are not careful, it will explode.

  1. It’s not very often that we get so much for free. That is a wonderful example of how the Lord is warning our nation!

May our faith and our works do you like a breath of fresh, life-giving air to the world around us. You are a breath of fresh air Bernie, and I am deeply grateful for your hard work in the ministry of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (ESV) 14 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,
