“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.”
Acts 20:28-30 NASB
God has brought this time of testing, this revealer of souls. He is giving people who profess faith in Jesus Christ, an opportunity to see the true nature of their souls. He is bringing to light the others gods that are being worshipped. He is also bringing the red alert for pastors and leaders to make them aware of the flock.
In watching the protests, I have noticed that most of those marching are peaceful and sincere in what they are trying to communicate through their actions. They are down for the cause. I have also seen that there are people bent on evil sprinkled in amongst those who are desiring to destroy.
I have been delighted in recent days as those who are sincere are dealing with those wolves. I watched a video of demonstrators tackling a young man who was taking a pick axe to a curb to free up rocks. He was then taken to the line of police for arrest. That has been happening more and more in recent days. The leaders of the peaceful protest have realized that ignoring those who don’t have the motivation of the greater group, are a sabotage to the cause.
The Church is in the same situation. Over the years I have seen and dealt with wolves in the church. Often these have been people coming into the flock to seduce, to confuse and lead away the weaker believers, to satisfy their wicked desires. I have dealt with men and women who were treating the services and ministries like a singles bar, coming to church to get laid. I have confronted others advancing political views, that run counter to the teaching of the Scriptures. I have even confronted people trying to fleece the flock with financial offers.
Some are seeking to justify their own misaligned views, ungodly views, by drawing others to their way of thinking. These are people who are worshipping other gods, and not Jesus Christ, the King of Glory.
As Paul said farewell to the Ephesians, he warned of the problems that would come. He warned of the difficulties that would stifle the growth and effectiveness of that body of believers. Sadly they did not heed the warning, and in the book of Revelation, we hear that the church of Ephesus had lost its first love.
Paul was also warning us today.
This is a critical time for believers, as we are in the midst of two tests, the ongoing pandemic and racial strife. In both of those, the people of God are being tempted to be distracted and drawn away after other gods. We have the god of politics, the god of race, the god of fear, the god of law and order. Pursuit of these gods, causes the believer to only establish a small compartment for the Jesus life, a place set apart from the rest of life. In reality, faith should be in all of the whole.
It is time for the body of Christ to inject a healthy dose of faith into the crises that have so infected the land. As in all things that involve the people of God we are to love. We are to call out those who insist on pointing fingers. They are not down for the cause. The cause of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must prayerfully and lovingly tackle those picking at the pavement for rocks, and stop them. They are detractors for this glorious moment where God is to be glorified.
Now is time for love to prevail. We must demonstrate the hardest love, that shown to enemies.
We believers are called to be not only sheep, but shepherds, as we guard the hearts and minds of believers. I saw many wonderful posts of people who are truly being transformed by these events in our world. I have seen others who are looking for justification for continuing in the racial bigotry and hatred that ought not be in the life of one who professes to know the Lord.
God has given us a golden opportunity to lead people to salvation in Jesus Christ. He has also given us a warning: time is short.
Pray for the those you know who are struggling with attitudes that are not conducive to the spread of God’s love. Pray for pastors who are in position of having to deal with those sowing disunity and the worship of other gods in their flocks.
Let’s love today!
