“Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and may the LORD be with you.””
1 Samuel 17:36-37 NASB
I have faced giants in my life. In all those situations, I have had a growing confidence in my God. I marvel at how the Lord built my faith, little by little, by showing Himself true in all situations. In the beginning, I took small steps, each shaky and unsure, as I slowly yielded my fear to hands of my Lord.
In the beginning of my walk, I felt as if God was moving me toward something bigger, as each faith building trial, became larger than the last. The greatest growth came when I had cancer a number of years ago. In that trial, He began to prepare me way ahead of time, as He began to show me His majesty and sovereignty in various events in my life. When my diagnosis came, I had great peace and an understanding that He was in control.
David has that confidence built up by seeing the deliverance of the Lord in His life. He had defeated a bear and a lion, by the power of God. He knew from those experiences that his God would deliver Him from this giant too.
We are facing giants day in and day out. Many of us have sickness, job loss, difficulty in a relationship, or any other trial one can imagine. All seem like giants, and unstoppable as we approach from the point of contention in our own strength.
We, too have a God who goes before us into battle. He will deliver us. When I lay in my bed at the Mayo Clinic so many years ago, I knew that I would have victory: either victory on earth, via remission or victory in glory with the Lord. There would be no loss.
That has guided me everyday as I live my life. There will never be a loss, even death is defeated. You too, believer can know that God will deliver you from the paw of the lion, the paw of the bear, or the sword of the giant. God is for you!
Nonbelievers, you can know this confidence through the forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ, who went to the cross to face the giant of sin and death, and defeated them by the power of His resurrection.
As our world is beginning to open up, we still sense the danger. I am one under great threat by this unseen enemy, this invisible giant. I will still live. I have the victory already. I go out with my sling filled with the strength of the Gospel of Jesus, instead of a smooth stone.
I am not sure if I will attend church this Sunday. I will petition the Lord as to whether I should or not. My heart is filled with a burning desire to do battle, but I will obey regardless. Sometimes He tells us to retreat, like Saul/Paul being lowered from a window in a bushel basket, to escape those who desired to kill him.
We are soldiers in the army of the Living God! Go forth!
