“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.””
John 11:25-27 NASB
Literature and movies have a long fascination with the idea of living forever. Even in the real world there is a desire to drag as much life out of bodies of flesh as we possibly can. There is an entire industry dedicated to looking better, feeling younger, and resisting the onslaught of entropy, or the tendency for things to degrade. In reality, I think that it is not the overwhelming desire to live long, but the fear of death and the unknown.
In today’s passage we see Jesus coming to see Mary and Martha after the death of Lazarus. Martha
meets Jesus and confronts him. She knew that He could have saved her brother. Jesus had more in mind then simply making one well.
I can remember my own encounter with mortality. I had a bout with cancer. I learned in that journey that death, for me was but a transition, from earth to glory. I had placed my faith in Jesus and I would never die. Yes, this battered body will give out someday, but my soul will live on for all eternity. I am immortal.
I have news for you: so are all who read this. For those in Christ Jesus, meaning those who have asked for their sins to be forgiven by Jesus’ atoning death on the cross, that eternity will be spent in Heaven. For those who, eschewing the Gospel and choose to rely on their own righteousness, eternity will be spent in hell. Heaven is where God is and Jesus is the only way.
“Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
John 14:6 NASB
I take comfort in the knowledge that my eternal future is secure. It is not secured by my goodness, my performance, nor my merit, but by the propitiation, or payment, for my sins. It is the grace of God, a gift, presented to me by Jesus, who died, was buried and rose again. Jesus paid a debt He didn’t owe, because I owed a debt I couldn’t pay.
I when I consider the cross, and how my sin put Him there, I am rent. I hate my sin.
The world is in a crisis. We have seen our lives turned upside down almost over night. The normal has been swept away, and I am not sure if it will ever be the same again. I am sure of one thing: I will spend my eternity in Heaven. That fact has given me a daily peace that I will repeat day in and day out as I proclaim it to the world.
I also delight in the fact that Jesus is the resurrection and the life. I am made new by the power of His resurrection from the dead. The old Bernie is fading away, day by day as the new is being built up, by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is also the life as I take steps each day in newness. I live to worship Him and pore over His word.
I have taken to “winding down” my days by playing worship videos before bed. It gives me a great bookend for my day as I start the day with worship music.
Believers, delight in your immortality! You are going to spend your eternity with Jesus in Heaven! We will see the King in all His beauty!
Nonbelievers, you too are immortal. You can have peace, even in this time of uncertainty by asking in faith to have your sins forgiven. A simple, heart felt prayer admitting that you’re a sinner, and asking Jesus to forgive is all you need. He is always listening to those who want to repent and be forgiven.
No matter how long this season lasts, eternity is longer and glory brighter.
Focus your attention on the Lord today. He is worthy and He is beyond all of this! The curse of sin and death has been defeated!
