“Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth; The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.””
Isaiah 40:4-5 NKJV
There are parts of this world where earthquakes are a regular occurrence in everyday life. They are so frequent that, people who live in these areas are prepared for the interruptions that can come. People in earthquake zones are often awakened to the potential of the ground beneath their feet shifting.
Even in earthquake zones there are people who are unaware of the potential of shaking. They are caught off guard and are suddenly jarred into reality. They are the ones scurrying about looking for supplies, hoarding everything they can find.
Earthquakes are amazing in that they completely change the terrain of the surrounding area. Valleys can be lifted, mountains made low. When they occur, they get everyone’s attention.
When I read the passage in Isaiah, I get the sense that something powerful is going to happen. John the Baptist quoted an earlier passage immediately preceding the one above, as he spoke of his ministry. He was one crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way for the Lord.
Our world is being shaken to its core. We are experiencing an earthquake that will shake the very foundation of every culture, everyone, everywhere. A way is again being prepared for the Lord. The proud are being brought low, the humble are being exalted and the way to human hearts is being made smooth for the furtherance of the Gospel.
Coronavirus is crying out, getting attention. Change is coming. For those caught up in business as usual, it is a jarring moment where attention is drawn to the presence of invisible forces that are affecting how we live. For many, this is the first earthquake, for others it is the latest in a series of traumas that have affected their lives.
I know about earthquakes.
My life has been a series of tremors that have transformed the landscape of my life and my heart. I remember when my life was simpler, I made plans, I walked where I pleased and I had the illusion that I was in control. The quakes have caused me to move from being one caught unawares, to one prepared.
This pandemic was just one more tremor in my life. One more earthquake. The Lord has prepared me for trial as I have learned to abide at all times. Suffering has the advantage of forcing one to focus on God and not on the situation that I cannot control. Over the years, I have had little opportunity to take a breath, as tremor after tremor has kept me dependent on the Lord.
Know this, believer, our God is truly greater than your deepest fear. He is the Deliverer! You can trust Him in the midst of even the strongest earthquake. Have confidence when you turn on the news and hear of all the bad things happening. Remember that Jesus has overcome the world.
Today would be a great day to open your bible and be reminded of the goodness and faithfulness of God. Today would be a great day to begin praying in earnest. It is also a great day to begin telling those around you, who do not know Jesus, about the great salvation and the forgiveness of sins.
The hearts of the people are being awakened by the situation we find ourselves in. People who have neglected the spiritual concerns are now considering Jesus. Many have a new sense of eternity as the death toll mounts and people wonder what happens after they die. I go into each day knowing that a my God will be there at the end, whether safe in my home, or safer in His.
